Taking an RS to the next level ........

Featured Replies

Ok Lads,

In theory if I was going to mod my mk2. Car is standard with factory 18s.

Any suggestions for the following

Suspension?

Brakes?

Remap?

Exhaust & sports cat?

I'd like to take it to around 270bhp. Car has been rolling road tested at 218bhp at the flywheel.

Trevor

And what would offer the best bang per buck (presumably a remap as with the 1.8T Mk1 engines?) and in what order of mods; exhaust next?

IS the Intercooler more efficient than the side mount Mk 1?

Just some thoughts,

Lee

I can recomend the KONI FSD's they are a superb balance between sports and compliant suspension.

I have the Eibach springs as well but you don't have to have them.

In terms of a remap I don't think it follows that if a company advertises to take a stock 197hp car to say 245hp that it would take yours to 266hp.

Maximum that most maps seem to come out with is around 245hp for stage 1.

The EVOMS intake was RR tested to give a 12 - 15 hp increase on a REVO stage 1 car.

A TB Exhaust or CB exhaust will improve things a little but don't expact miracles.

If your going to do whole lot get the suspension and brakes done first then the exhaust and get it remapped after to take it into consideration

Has anyone fitted a big turbo to a MKII on here?

@Stu. How much did the springs lower yours by? FSDs would be on the top of my shopping list.

I agree on the output figures. If I went for a full Milltek and something like REVO or MTM surely I'd see 270bhp at the flywheel?

I think it's 25mm IIRC. There is a differance between the earlier cars and the later ones from stock. Mine has always been lower than Steve's or Chris's car.

I don't think you would Trevor, the REVO figures are a little optomistic at best.

Thanks lads. Had a read of that thread. ;)

Seconded! A good first step.

I had Koni FSDs fitted (keeping the OEM springs) on day 2 of having my vRS. I chose to fit them for their effect in making the ride more comfortable, I found the ride on test drives too jittery on broken surfaces, altough they do a very good job at making the handling taught when required.

MY next step is likely to be the anti-roll bar department. Being the vRS TDI I have a heavier lump under the bonnet with a bit more understeer than the TFSIs, so to uprate the ARBs ought to be a good move (certainly works well on the vRS Fabia).

I have no particular knowledge on this though, but I do remember that Fluffmeister mentioned a while back that he had uprated his ARBs. Any comments?

Engine/exhaust upgrades? Not on my shopping list yet, I can rarely use the straight line performance that I have, so don't really need more.

Shifty had uprated ARB's, I don't think Fluffmeister does.

I have fitted MTM Kit for 330ps and dynoed 353ps with 480NM Torque not bad :)

PS. A friend of mine has an Nissan 350z (with some mods arround 330ps) and until 250km i was front for about 4 cars

I do ..... they where sitting in the garage for a while before I had time to do anything with them

, I have a mk5 golf neuspeed adjustable at the rear and non adjustable at the front, not sure about them because thinks are a little to stiff now, they don't seem to let the FSD's work as well as they did prior to fitment so they will be coming off probably next week as I have a free day.

Stu is right about the exhausts as well, in some ways I feel that unless your doing a turbo upgrade then a cat back or turbo back is wasted cash, that's just my opinion of course. I could not see any quantifiable difference between a turbo backed car and a cat backed car when I was visiting revo earlier in the year so I would say the money is best spent elsewhere.

For my tuppence I would do:

Stage 1 Revo (In isolation the standard suspension is pretty damn good and well up to coping with the extra ooooomph)

EVOMS (makes a proven increase in power and torque and sounds fantastic)

Koni FSD's (really improved the low speed ride and the car feels more agile now)

ARB's (not really needed if going the Koni route)

If I decide my Octy is a keeper, then I can see a bit of an upgrade to it's forced induction system sometime down the line ...... possibly ....... maybe

You sly old dog!!! :P

LOL, I brought them back from the US last year mate, they have been sitting in the garage attic for bloomin ages, in fact I think Steve once tried to talk me into letting him have 'em :)

See, he hit's you with his hypnotic "moderator" stare, and the next thing, your 2 grand down, the mrs is well grumpy, you get a sore bum, but the care ain't half running well

ok, so maybe not the sore bum ....... but close

Thanks for the information.

Remap and FSDs seem to be the way to go.

Give it time ;)

Hi Fluffmeister; Do you have Eibach spring fitted with the FSDs? (I have a hunch that you do).

These of course will stiffen the car and to then put the ARBs on as well is perhaps making it (as you say) too much. If one has OEM springs (as I do) with FSDs, then to fit the ARBs might just be right. Yes?

I had the JabbaSport rear ARB fitted to my Fabia (with KoniSport shocks) which really sorted out the handling. As I have the vRS TDI, to fit just one uprated ARB might just be enough to tighten things up, neutralising the extra (compared to the TFSI vRS) understeer from the diesel lump up front and make things sweet.

Theory correct? Uprated front or rear ARB? I'm thinking rear (same as for a Furby).

Mine WAS around the 260bhp mark but that had a shed load of goodies thrown on it (pretty much all the stuff that's been mentioned previously apart from the ARB's) and it went like a ******* ;):D .

You have definately picked the best two mods first with the REVO Stage I map and the Eibach & Koni FSD's and still maintain that these offer the best overall improvement in performance and handling. As for the Milltek exhaust, I think that over time it HAS given an increase in performance but the gains are negligble but I would also consider Forge's Front Mounted 'Twintercooler' when funds allow but in fairness the car never went on the rollers after it being fitted so I'll never know as to what gains were to be had from it.

For reference, here are a couple of before and after Koni/Eibach pics............

Pretty much spot on old boy :D

That looks so nice Steve

Get a bigger turbo on the next one :)

Can't understand what those stickers on the side in the second picture would be???

Must be a reflection Stu :)

Very cute :P :D

I've done a bit of reasearch on the Anti-Roll Bar issue and have got the following info (for what it is worth);-

Octy vRS OEM - Front 23mm, Rear 22mm

Eibach (Golf V) - Front 26mm, Rear 23mm

Neuspeed (Golf V) Front 25mm, Rear 25mm (adjustable)

For total control, looks like Eibach front with Neuspeed rear will be the combination to have, but I might just try a Neuspeed Rear for starters.
