Why does the windscreen mist so easily?

Featured Replies

Noticed lately that the windscreen mists very easily, and I'm finding I need to use the demister almost constantly.

Is this comon on the Mk2, as I don't believe I've ever had any car need it as much as this one. Or is it a trait of climate control.

If you have climate control then this will dehumidfy which should minimise any misting up. Try setting it to 'Auto' for a while and check that you inadvertantly have not got the 'recirculate' switched on.

Generally, I suggest you give the screen a good clean with, say, Autoglym Glass Cleaner (the blue cream, sort of like a thick windowlene) this will not only clean the screen, naturally, but also then helps prevent it from misting up.

The other, pessimistic, angle to think of is, that you have a fault with the Climate Control and it is not dehumidifying as it should do; visit to your dealer would be called for.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it.

Not had a problem with my MkII, but my wife's Fabia was always misted up on a damp day. The car interior felt clammy in the morning but we put it down to our location (100m from the sea).

my Mk 2 very very rarely mists up. I have climate contol on auto most of the time (have tried it on econ and don't see any difference in fuel consumption).

make sure you are not on "recirculate"

I get a misting issue if I turn c/control off. Soon clears when I enable it :)

Probably global warming, seems to be the cause of everything else nowadays.;)

Heavy breathing ?

'Extra' activities ;)

Ours, albeit a Fabia, seems to go through 'phases'.

Usually a good general windows clean and then a quick blast with the aircon sorts it.

Plus, forgot, your in my locale, and we have had some seriously sh*tty weather recently - so, yes, have had same recently.

I've always been led to believe that that the misting is caused by the plastics used in the dash - they give off vapour that causes misting.

Might have a bit of misting on the occasional morning, but, soon clears as soon as the climate control is switched on. Other than that, never. I always have my CC on auto.

My CC is always on auto, and I dont seem to get any misting.

LOL, maybe it's just my heavy breathing :)

Or the changeable, humid weather lately....

Yes mine mist up rapidly in wet weather, but as said above the Climate control quickly gets rid of it and keeps it at bay.

Like others I tend to run with the CC in the on position as it seems to add to the general comfort.

We all breathe out warm moisture which condenses on the colder glass around us, particularly when it's raining or cold outside. You'll notice more misting up the more people are in the car. It's the same effect as dew settling on the ground.

Pouring rain is worst for misting but using the air-con means that the air pumped into the car is de-humidified as well as cooled to 5 degrees C. Climate control if you have it will heat the air back up to the temperature you dial in but leave it dry. The mist disappears.

I've noticed the windows mist up more than other cars, if the climate control is off, but if on, it clears quicker than those same "other cars".

my Mk 2 very very rarely mists up. I have climate contol on auto most of the time (have tried it on econ and don't see any difference in fuel consumption).

I tried the econ while on a motorway with constant speed and a constant MPG, as soon as I switched econ on my MPG jumped up. I had it on auto, about 22 C, but it was cooling, I turned the econ on as the cold air was too cold. I don't think econ works if it's giving out warm air, only cold.

My Mark ll mists up less than my old Golf GTi and my Dad's BMW. It does mist up, but the air con sorts it....UNLESS you have the rear nearside passenger window obsured by a Skoda part sunshade. Geting out of a junction and seeing past parked cars for on comming traffic was IMPOSSIBLE this evening....had to hope for the best after an educated judgement.

its the wet weather, but ive noticed any car with climate control/ air con mists up more cos the air con takes out so much moisture out the air that when you turn it off its basically returning back to normal humidity.
