How does the boot lock itself once it's been opened?

Rob.

By being shut - assuming you opened it with the key in the lock, not remotely ...

It's supposed to be a convenience feature. You can open the boot only from the remote, the boot pops up and then locks itself when you shut it after a couple of seconds.

It's normally useful but unfortuanately for John it's a pain in the neck! I did the same thing on my Polo as it also had this feature, I had to call out VW assistance :(

Oh...right...but why would you do that?! :P

There is no key for the boot, just a microswitch under the grab handle which is active once you open the doors or boot.

D

So don't you just press the microswitch to open it, much like you'd push the button on the back of the Octavia's boot?

Oh, though if it's locked itself automatically that wouldn't work...

Yeah, I've always found that a dodgy system, if you open by the remote how you can accidently lock the keys in the boot. I know someone who did it with a Honda Civic and had the AA break into his car. He didn't take my suggestion that a brick would be easier too well!
