The best performance fuel?

Featured Replies

What Car? has details of the results of some new tests on performance fuel. Tested were Tesco 99, Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate 102.

Ultimate at 2.5 times the costs of Tesco 99 !!!

very happy with the result for Tesco 99 and I will stick with it. [usually get the 5p off the pump price anyway - we seem to use a lot of groceries!]

Me too - the Octys regular diet is Tesco 99 :D:D

Clubcard points too :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

The Shell V-Power and Aral(Bp in Germany) Ultimate are both 100 Octane. Havent noticed any difference in this to V-Power/Tesco 99 in the UK.

Although Have done a satnav proven 156mph on 100 octane:rolleyes:

Only petrol i wont use (apart from 95 Ron except in emergencies) is BP ultimate in the UK my vRS doesnt seem to like the taste:rolleyes:

Will definately be using Tesco99 once i move back to UK after them results

Mine likes a good slurp of V-Power.

i might have to give tesco's 99 ago, always used vpower.

The difference between Tesco 99 and Shell V-Power on the road I feel is negligible. Tesco is the cheaper of the two so that's what I fill up with.

I found V-Power to be good (down south) and cheaper than 97 Ron up north

V power for me,the nearest garage is a bit of a trawl, but the car likes it..so who am i argue!:)

Ultimate 102, if you can find it, for day to day has got to be a no no. Probably worth using is you are a track-day specialist.

From experience in a chipped 1.4 Fabia, yes Tesco 99 is good but Shell V-power IMHO gave a fuller more consistent level of performance.

I've started using Tesco 99 when I can find it over Shell V-Power but not because of these or other tests, it's because of the fiasco with the Pluspoints/Drivers Card scheme :thumbdwn:

Now, the Which? magazine muddies the water, further, by announcing that most cars will run just fine on ordinary unleaded!

I've used Shell and Tesco Super and haven't noticed any difference in my 2.0FSI, but as it's new I haven't worked it hard yet!

Here, in the far South West, I have not yet found any Tesco 99.

I have 4 branches within 40 miles of home. One sells only 95 RON and the others have 95 and 97. Fortunately my nearest filling station (5 miles) is a Shell retailer with V-Power.

The distance to the Tesco 97 stockists pretty much wipes out their price advantage. Is there any real advantage in using 97 RON against 95 ?

I thought 97 much better than 95 till I discovered 99. Car flap says it should ideally be 98, but can use 95 if you have to.

They will but if the car is tuned to run on 97 then the ECU will adapt and run with reduced performance on the 95.

It's strange that no one so far has mentioned Sainsburys? There is one near me that sells super for 96.9 and my Octy runs fine on it. I also get Nectar points as well so it's as win win.

I found Sainsurys 97 good till I discovered our local Tesco was changing its super from 97 to 99. Also at present we often get 5p a litre off due to our shopping, but that offer comes and goes.

Exactly. Any car will run on the minumum grade and in truth, most people will always be happy with that. I was. I was very sceptical about Tesco 99. I was wrong.

Regarding Sainsburys. That's not bad stuff too. I use that in an emergancy as it's just round the corner from where I live, but that 98.9p here now.

how about diesels? - anyone know of any tests done for us oil burners?

As a novice, do I conclude that my 2.0fsi will run better using 99?

I seem to recall comments on an earlier similar thread that some opinions believe 95 would eventually coke up the engine more. I don't know if this was ever verified though.

I believe this may come down to who supplies the Sainsbury's as I tried some of their city diesel and my car was noticeably rougher and down on economy compared to local Tesco diesel which is probably served by a different company....

Chris

I just checked my petrol flap after ednmra comments on what it said on the fuel cap and am shocked i thought mine said 97 but in fact says 98 too!!

Have also found out that Tesco is supplied by Esso, Sainsburys is supplied by Shell, but cannot confirm it. When the fuel arrives at the petrol station, it is there the addictives and extras are mixed with the fuel which is what makes some brands run better than others.

I just put in my first tank of super last night (Tesco 99). I've read hear that it takes a little while for the engine to pick up the difference (half a tank?).

Waiting to feel the difference over 95.
