rear brake pads

Featured Replies

Brace yourself then chaps!

Mine needed new discs and pads all round at 40k:eek:

That was a bill I didn't want to see that early:thumbdwn:

Our MK1 Octy needed new discs/pads at 44k - I didn't think that was bad

Having checked the rears on our Superb, looks like there is 2/3rds on the pads and very little wear on the discs - at 18.5k.

German Swedish & French stock the right tool and also the "Textar" pads which are identical to the VAG originals.

The screw pitch on the piston wind back tool has to match the thread inside the caliper piston otherwise winding back will be difficult (the tool either becomes threadbound or falls out). The G S & F tool is correct. The wrong tool can cause damage.

rotodiesel.

I total agree with all of this reply. I bought front and rear pads for my B5 Passat from Eurocarparts and was given ATE fronts and Textar rears. As the correct bolts were not supplied with the Textar I went back (forgot to take the Textar ones to exchange) and bought ATE so that I would have ATE all round. This was a bad move as the ATE also had the wrong bolts so I ended up just reLoctiting the originals - but the ATE pads do not have anti-squeal fitted AND the original pads turned out to be Textar - damn damn damn! So, at next change I'll fit the Textars and at the same time lose the brake squeal!! Cleaning and lots of Copaslip made not a bit of differance to the noise. BTW I changed all discs and pads at 34K really just to sort out the dreaded loss of braking that Passats and A4s from MY2000 suffered while at motorways and salted wet cold roads - I fitted ATE Power???? ellipticaly grooved discs. Also fitted the B5.5 lower elements to try to keep the caliper/discs a bit clearer from salt spray - something seemed to work! Windback tool, I have a Halford's one - originally it seemed to work okay, but now, maybe only with the Polo 9N, it seems to jam up, so I just rotate the piston using the tool but without forcing it off the other side of the caliper - just using heavy hand pressure to recess the piston. I have not managed to get a full technical write up on this specific design of "rear pad handbrake mechanism". My car has only run 24K since then and both front and rear are only about half worn - its 4WD if that makes any differance. Interestingly, when your pads have only 8mm of material left you tend to get a written warning from MOT folk - its time that both MOT and manufacturers used the same "replace now" citeria on this.

Blimey chaps, there must be some heavy right feet out there.

Just replaced all discs and pads at 120,000Mls (nearly all motorway miles admittedly )

Have been running a superb as a taxi since march. Having spoken to a couple of other guys who run them, they had mentioned needing to replace rear pads before 20k. As a taxi they get a fair bit of abuse. But even with this mine did not need replacing till 40k. The car has now done 70k since march! Still on the second set.

As already said though, the wind back tool is a must. With out it they just don't want to know. With it, it takes 30 seconds!!

Have Just Had Mine Checked After Having The 2.5 Tdi For 30k Miles, It's Got 57k On It. Garage Says Only About Half Worn, And Have No Info That They Were Done Before I Got The Car. Ps Apologies For The Caps, Accessing From Mobile And Can't Turn Them Off. Cheers

further to my rear pads:

fronts now need changing at 19.5 k

roto is correct about the pattern part pads

but if you are careful in using the handbrake

for the first 1k the cheap non skodas are

longer lasting.
