Replacing a big CRT monitor

Featured Replies

Well after 5 years + of the best monitor view I have ever had, my Samsung Syncmaster 1200nf is starting to get flaky. I need to replace a 22" flat screen 2048 x 1536 pixel monitor and no one makes the CRT ones any more.

Anyone know where I could get it repaired? Failing that, I reckon the next best thing will be a 24" or 27" TFT. Any suggestions keeping it below

I know, shame isn't it?

Check dabs.com - PC Hardware, Components, Software, Digital Cameras, MP3 Players and Ebuyer - Cheap Computers, Laptops, Digital Cameras, TVs & more! for decent prices on these new fangled TFTs :P That's generally where I get ones from. Or www.misco.co.uk sometimes have deals on.

I've been looking into 24" TFT solutions for CAD users at work. I'll take a look at the s/sheet tomorrow and link to what I've found so far. Should be possible to keep below

Thanks for the links guys. The thing has to be a minimum 24" to keep half decent image height. The 22 I have at the moment is a 4:3, a 16:9 will be much smaller vertically. May even have to go 27".

Have scoured Dabs, Aria etc, really looking for recommendations. Ebuyer customer service has been too poor for me to consider them. How do the TFTs work out with CAD? I found before that you had difficulty telling line thickness differences unless they were really big.

Also, and something I cannot foresee being possible, is that with the ultra high res CRT, you can sharpen an image and see how it will look in print. Because LCD monitors have an artificial sharpening to them naturally, it makes image sharpening for print a hit and miss affair. Anyone any experience with this aspect of them?

Chris

I can't fault Dell's monitors at the moment. Have a look here, more specifically their 24" Ultrasharp... I know it goes over your budget by

To answer your CAD type questions Chris, its a work in progress really! We've been hanging on because there hasn't been a need to jump. We use Iiyama Vision Masters almost exclusively for CAD use and they've been brilliant. But irreplaceable now :(

Will be a case of trial and error for us TBH. You're quite right with the height issue on a 22" - just a touch too small height-wise. A good contrast level seems to help with line accuracy in the brief trials I've managed. Helps because we found the backlight then didn't have to be turned up quite so much, making for a warmer and slightly more CRT look to output. Artificialness of image is a big issue though, as you've mentioned. Not sure there's a way round that I'm afraid. An issue users will have to adapt for.

The world seems to be going backwards in some areas. TV and monitors were better, if bulkier as a quality CRT. Passenger air flight no longer available in supersonic form. Ever heavier cars in these days of super light materials.

The Dell 24" is one under consideration, will do more research tomorrow.

Chris

Absolutely right :(

A random world we live in really...

Anyway - good monitor that! Just trying to think of somewhere you could try it out, before making the plunge. I'm sure a Samsung 24" was on my list at work too, but I'll confirm in a few hours :)

****y World have the HP 24". May try the local one to see if they have on in stock.

Chris

Didn't think much to the larger HP models last time a demo bloke turned up (we use all HP PCs/laptops/servers so they're nice to us).

But worth a look...

****y World now sell mutimedia PCs and lots of TVs, so a complete waste of time going in there. Any suggestions as to where to see monitors on demo in Essex?

Yeah, Its rubbish surviving crashes these days ;) :P

Make the most of it while you can. I have been out looking at LCD panels today and quite frankly they are sh!ite at best by comparison to the Samsung CRT I have. I was considering a large one, but to be honest, for the money they really are too poor to consider, so I think I will just get a 22" wide screen panel and wait until something worth buying comes along.

Chris

Still on a 17" CRT here. :D However this thread made me realise that there was about an inch of black around the actual image so I've just played about with the settings and it's now 2" bigger.

What have you looked at so far Chris? Hopefully we might be able to narrow the field a little for you.

what about the apple cinema displays? they are sexy, and the image is quite good!

I still think my old 19" NEC Mitsubishi 930SB was the best CRT i have ever had.. it just got too small! its now sat in storage as good as the day i bought it

I usually go for second hand crt's off ebay

you can pick up the best of the best for 30 quid, doesnt seem to be a lot on there at the moment though.

The Apple displays are worth investigating, good shout - fairly pricey though. John Lewis are good for those, or an Apple store (if you have either nearby).

2nd hand CRTs - I would have issues with usable life remaining there, and also warranty.

Steve

Do him a good deal and I doubt you will be left out ;)

part of our contract with apple means that we have to charge the same price as they do and no lower..

Does that count as price fixing???
