Question on Puddle Lights

Featured Replies

Worth it or a bit of a gimmick ? I must admit to having been impressed by my mates Granada Scorpio years ago that had lights illumination the road.

Willbe of help getting the little'un out of the back on dark eveningsm or do they just illuminate the front doors ?

TA !

I'd vote for gimmick, i'm afraid, although i should point out I've never owned a skoda with them.

Had them on my previous Mk3 mondeo. Not enough light to be of any signifcant use - but they look smart when you unlock the car at night though :)

I'd love to get them retro fitted to my VRS - I think they look cool (but probably limited in real function terms) :o

I have them and like them, they are both a gimmick and they are useful, they only illuminate under the mirror. Would I have them retro fitted, No, am I glad I have them, Yes.

Gilesk - just about the same I was going to say!

I think they make the car look classy and can be useful on occasions (especially in areas of poor street lighting) but I wouldnt bother retrofitting them or paying extra if they were ever an option.

Is it actually possible to retro-fit them to a vRS?

Good question, i am pondering fitting them to a vRS but I dont know whether the wiring is generic across the whole range or specific to puddle lit models.

The puddle light plugs into a tiny PCB in the mirror that houses the side repeater LED's. I have a car with and a car without so I might have a look and see whats what.

Id be interested too as i tried turning it on with VAGCOM but didnt work(gave an error), if the gimmick can work then great if not then no sleep lost!

Maybe the PCB is a different type if you have puddle lights hence the error.

I'll have my VAG-COM soon so I can check it out

I'd say for most circumstances, they just look nice, but I will admit that they come in useful when gettin in or out of the car at my garage (in a block away from house) when it's pitch black.

A really useful gimmick, but i wouldn't pay extra for them

they help when you need to pee on the locks in the winter when they are frozen I would have thought in colder climates. Other than that, they add to discharging the battery. :)

Thats a shame then. My mates 1989 Scorpio had lights under the sills if I remember correctly. They certaintly worked. Whats the point of spending x thousands developing something thats not of much use ?

The puddle lights DO work in the dark, as per the name they light up the area under the door where there may be PUDDLES. You can also skillfully avoid dog poo by the car as well but Skoda dodged a bullet by not going with the name "dog poo lights"

I wonder if the standard W5W bulbs can be replaced with high intensity LED's.

This has been discussed before but no one has tried it.............yet.

So guys, anybody has tried retrofitting them? Any useful information will be appreciated...

Puddle lights ??? !

Behave guys.

BMW have door handle lights, equally as stupid.

I'll start a list for possible silly options -

1) Puddle lights

2) Tornado warning display

In other countries the Octavia also has LED illumination in the door handles - inside.

I think thats a feature on the New L&K

It most certainly is, white illumination in the door handle recesses. Looks rather nice with a W8 in the roof ;)

yes it is...

Useful I reckon, if it's literally pitch dark or if the car is out of the street lights. They could do with being a touch brighter though and aimed more towards where you actually open the door, rather than under the mirror as has been said.

Each light has a piddly little W5W so no surprises about the poor output.

An LED based experiment might be on the cards soon ;)

How is the cover removed? I may experiment with LED's if it is readily accessible. :)

I had the dubious pleasure of changing a repeater on the passenger mirror on my previous Octavia. You can pull the entire colour coded mirror housing in an upwards direction but also slightly towards the back of the car, IIRC it's helpful to have the mirror looking downwards slightly. It's a bit of a pig but they do pop off.

for those of you thinking of retro fitting puddle lights - I wouldn't bother!

I checked SWMBO's vRS and my L&K and the all important RED wire is missing, it looks like a different loom is used for the non puddle light mirrors.

There is a little PCB where the puddle light plugs into. The three wires you see going into a black plug connect to said PCB.
