Randon stalling - 1.4 Corsa

Featured Replies

My wife has a 1.4 16V Corsa with 80k on the clock. It has generally been faultless since we've had it. However, it has recently gained a few (related) problems.

When driving on steady throttle, it will randomly stutter 4-5 times or until you lift off.

Sometimes when driving in a "spirited" manner (as the wife does, sometimes) or when wanting to quickly reverse into our driveway, it will stall as soon as you put your foot on the clutch. For example, if you quickly pull up at the side of the road in 3rd, put your foot on the clutch to quickly select reverse to go back into the drive, it will die totally as if you've switched the engine off (ignition is still on)

Sometimes in traffic with her foot on the clutch or when in neutral, she's felt it idle a little roughly, though I've never felt it as I seldom drive it.

Dirty throttle body? Clogged fuel filter? Something else?

Its never been on a motorway in its 9 year life and has had nothing but lady owners who trundle round town in it - so I'm tempted to stick a bottle of Redex in it.

Sounds like the age old issue of sticking valves to me.

Idle control valve? Or the valves?

Which ever, what is the cure?

The inlet valves usually, requires head removal, strip out valves and increase the bore of the valve guides with a reamer (is the fix we used to do years back).

Sounds like fun and hardly worth it on a car that is worth about

I had a very similar problem on a 1.4 16v corsa with the DIS unit , where the HT Leads connect, Tech1(vauxhalls vagcom) didnt log any codes for it either. If it does turn out to be that give me a shout as i have a spare one laying about.

have you tried redex yet and a good burn down a private road? also when was the last service?

Last service was 2k miles ago.

Redex will be tried in the morning.

It's a Vauxhall. Case Closed!

[sharp intake of breath!] Have you bought a Monaro, Phil? Or have you gone for a VXR8? Either way I hate you lots.:P

Roy, Phil's being so evasive about the car he bought because he's ashamed. I quite like it myself.... :D

fpmsl! Nice one Chris!

wife had a corsa, same problem changed the fuel filter by the tank, ran like a dream after

Does it have an ECOTEC engine? If so is the amber fault light on the dash illuminated? It could be a fair few things, from a failed camshaft or crankshaft speed sensor to a knackered idle air control valve. A failed exhaust oxygen sensor causes them to cut out too.
