Understeer isnt an issue when driven properly :D

Before this car was "hardcore" when it just had remap zorst and filter with spare + rear seats out it could pull about 2 car lengths on me to 100mph from a rolling start, and i had marginally more power than shifty back then... off the line it could crucify mine due to the sticky tyres.... that thing will be damn scary now!

everyone who saw me at trax knows i can't drive properly:rofl: but my main problems were understeer, bodyroll, inside front wheel spinning up in the corners and the people i have spoken have remidies ranging from a few hundred to several thousand pounds so i am no better off than when i started with the modding of my car:thumbup:

Cut back 26kgs/4 stone so far, with keeping my car still looking like a car!

Taken out;

Spare wheel

jack and box

Back foot mats

Rear head rests

Parcel shelf

ash tray

Rubber mat in the shelf under the cd player

Batery box

Engine cover

Still to come,

Sound proofing round wheel arches, and engine bay.

Sun visors

Roof handles

Should lighten the load a bit, iv already noticed a bit of a difference (or is it in my head?!)

Iv also kicked my girl friend out and im on a diet! :)

26kg? Is it really worth it!!

I took the wheel and jack out of the front of myold esprit. As it didn't have power steering you certainly noticed the difference.

Dropping weight is a great idea but you do have to be careful. If the tyre delaminates or something you may find a recovery company would charge you full whack to get the car as they would say it came with a spare so you should have one in the car (Cool thing about the GT is it never had a spare wheel from the start)

If you were really serious about losing weight then how about getting some panels made in fibreglass or carbon fibre/fibreglass. You can drop some serious weight this way (bonnet maybe and tailgate??)

Another big gain can be had in getting some magnesium alloys. These can make a big diference to the unsprung weight??

Just a thought??

Cheers

Well its up to 29kg now which is well over 4 and a half stone, which i think is worth it yes.

I bought some of the tyre stuff that gets you back home or to a garage, plus i dont do long journeys (if i did id put the spare back in)

Just to update this thread :D

I installed a sub/amp in the back a month or so ago which weights 14kg. Decided to take the spare wheel and jack etc.. out again.

I went for a 10" sub on purpose which a small box to save weight and 14kg for it all in seems pretty good.

....must get some tyre weld soon!!

i don't see a point in me making my car lighter, when a fat barsterd like me is going to get in and drive it:thumbup:

:D

It probably won't make any difference at all, and knowing my luck i'll get a flat in the next week.

All for the need for speed ;)

A few things you need to ask yourself are:

Have you fitted larger wheels

Fitted non OEM wheels (not all, but the vast majority)

Upgraded your ICE

All these will ADD weight to your car.

Perspex windows are not much lighter than todays (thinner) glass.

So to the OP's question, is it all worth it? on an everyday road car no, its a waste of time, money and effort, does getting to work (etc) 15 seconds earlier (in a colder, noisier car) really matter?

On a track car, then possibly.

On a sprint/rally/race car then yes, because every second does count.

BTW Shifty, i would SERIOUSLY look at your harnesses mounting points mate (if in doubt look at the fitting instructions) both of the lap belt mountings should be behind the holes in the seat so they are both pulling you back into the seat.

The rear mounting should be in the center of the holes in the headrest at no less than 45 degrees (from floor).

If (heaven forbid) you are in a crash you need to be held into your seat equally not like yours which will try to twist your seat to the outside of the car.

BTW this is not a dig at you, obviously you did not know this when you fitted them otherwise you would of done them the correct way.

....must get some tyre weld soon!!

I've had some experience of using tyre weld, and it's pretty useless - wouldn't bother with it. If a puncture is small enough to be fixed with tyre weld, it'll be a slow puncture and reinflating the tyre will probably get you on your way (12v compressors are pretty cheap, can be re-used, and won't annoy tyre repairers!). If your puncture is bigger than this, the tyre weld will just dribble out uselessly...

Rob.

The bonnet weights a ton on the Mk II Octy VRS - has anyone looked into light weight replacements?
