Weight saving?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Anyone bothered any weight saving on their cars?

I was thinking about removing the spare wheel/tyre and getting one of those cans that will block the puncture and blow the tyre up for a short trip to a garage / home.

Worth it?

...and yes I am bored :D

Really?! I don't think I could remove the back seats, want to keep it as practical as possible!!

Wonder how much the spare weights, 20-30kg I should think.

Anyone done this? Worth doing?

I tried one of those cans - Didn't work....

Removing back seats will save a lot of weight. Not sure what else on an octy.

I'll get some pics up to show you how far I went......makes a hell of a difference :)

trouble with those cans of tyre foam is ot makes a mess of the wheel and once used a tyre cannot be repaired properly.

but you could probably save a a good 50Kg by taking out the rear bench, spare tyre and jack.

I might be geeky about it, and wiegh all the parts no longer fitted to my car. Seat belts must be a kilo each x 4.

I remember the spare with jack etc was 4.5 stone - 28 kgs ish. Rear bench is pretty heavy, I would say at least same again for the lot. Plus I saved 30kgs swapping the front seats for some "proper" ones :)

All ads up, I reckon my car is 1100 kgs now, instead of the 1350 it once was. No carpets, no plastic trim, at all, just the dash, two Sparco seats, harnesses, thats pretty much all thats left in there.

28kgs for the jack and spare is a pretty good saving! How do you get around the fact that you might need the spare/jack at some point?

You reckon you've saved 250kg? Wow, that must make hell of a difference!

Pics would be good mate :)

If I make a long journey, which I don't often these days, ill pop the spaer and jack in, other than that, two tins of tyre weld would hopefully get me home. Ill do a couple of pics tomorrow and get them up in here.

How much is tyre weld out of interest? :)

250kg is a hell of a lot. Could you add up, what you removed to see if it comes to that?

Plastic trim, carpets, mats, spare wheel, seats, tool kit, belts....

Pictures. As it happens I have the rear seats in, and rear shelf along with rear speakers, simply because I have no room in the garage, but you can get the idea.

Snoopie - it's just an estimate mate :) I doubt the car started at 1350 anyhow, as it was a standard model with no options. I have lighter wheels, no interior, no spare, much lighter front seats etc. From the wieght of the box in the garage, plus how heavy I know other things to be, i'm estimating the car to now wiegh roughly 1100 kgs. I'll pop it on a wieghbridge when it's on the road again.

Now that is hardcore!

I'd love to see my girlfriend face if I did that to car ha!

Ok Shifty mate. That is certainly well stripped out lol. There was a standard yellow car on here, that went onto a weighbridge, which didn't have much petrol in it, and a couple of CD's, and weighed 1320kg dead on. Estimated with a full tank would be 1350kg. From all of that, I'd say your looking at a good 1200-1250 dependant on fuel. Well done though :D

Yours must be bloody noisy though Dave..

When it actually goes that is ( sorry, couldn't resist:D )

Won't be noisy when the windows are open :D

blimey dave, that is well and truely stripped out :D

thining about it say your running around 200bhp with your bigger turbo stripping out 250Kg has changed your power to weight from 148bhp per ton to 181bhp per tonne :D

now thats good going for not much money

:D I'm hoping to hit the 230 bhp mark when it's mapped :)

very nice, should go well then Dave. still might struggle against the ambulance when its all fixed though :D

Fair play it must go pretty well, but no offense its looks awful! each2 there own i guess! u shud but a 1.4 engine in it, it will b well light then!

On the weight 2 power ratio topic, saw a mini on a mini day that had 2 yammy R1 engines in it, 320BHP and prob weighed about 500kgs! now 640BHP per tonne is quite nippy!
