None in early life but once they get miley, I can imagine an expensive repair bill, they have two clutches I think.

Yep, two clutches which have been designed to last the lifetime of the gearbox.... we have two cars with DSG, one at 52k and the other at 18k, no probs with either and they've been thrashed er, driven enthusiastically for virtually the whole time

Looks like fun. Hope you enjoy it :)

Is enjoyment an issue? No? OK, well just a one-off incident that happened last year when stuck in stop-start traffic on the Paris p

I'm also assuming that Microsoft must provide some of the software that pilots the gearbox, since rebooting (pulling over, switching the ignition off and then on again) cured the problem.

I am an electronics technician, I doubt its made by microsoft :), all electronics (it doesnt always work) can be reset in this way after a minor fault.

Following this thread - Tell me how long do folks leave the DSG in "D" whilst in traffic. I tend to try and remember to put in N , but then fumble around when traffic pulls away to get back in D as you have to have foot on brake to do this.

What is a safe amount of time to leave or is this doing big damage to clutches.

I think that the clutches disengage after a few seconds and I found that sometimes it was not ready to go when I was.

I have now got into the habit of treating it like a manual and knock it into N when at rest, as one would in a manual. Similarly as soon as the traffic starts to move, it's foot on the brake and into D for the off. I find it then pulls away nice and smooth.

Lovely gearbox - tows the caravan well too.

It is a peach, it just takes a little getting used to. Putting it into neutral at lights?really, whats the point, all you have to do is lift your foot of the brake a bit and the clutch disengages nice and smoothly. If you put it in neutral the box still has to engage first regardless, unless keeping your foot on the brake is tiring????????

So you can tow with it too! Do you have to fit a gearbox oil cooler?

Did the car go in to limp mode?

Nope, it revved away quite happily in first and reverse, just wouldn't change gear. No warning light, or audible warning.

As I say, it really was just a one off. Because the traffic really was stop-start inching forward for over an hour, I didn't notice it until I was almost off the p

You're right, but I've got an Apple Macintosh at home and couldn't resist the dig. It was a cheap shot, I know

QUOTE: "unless keeping your foot on the brake is tiring????????"

No it's not tiring for you, the driver in front, it's just annoying, selfish and ignorant to the driver behind....

What's wrong with the handbrake? Oh that's right - you'd need to take your arm off the arm rest to use that!!

Not once, but twice!! Once to pull the brake on, and once to release it. How tiring is that? And with the arm rest extended, that's a really inconvenient thing to have to do, and you risk spilling your coffee. I mean, like, can't the people behind you just look away momentarily? Or put sunglasses on or something?

:orb_geek: Hi Guys, can we get back to DSG Gearboxes please! Thanks in advance. :orb_geek:

I did post what I thought was a normal response and was not going to let that reply go, I am sorry, I apologise to you.

One thing to remember about the DSG is when you are at a standstill, you can't just leave it in 'D' and put the handbrake on (like you can with a normal auto box). You either have to keep your foot on the brake pedal or put it in 'N' to avoid burning the clutches.

Having used my DSG Box for a week, I have to say its a peach to drive. If my onboard computer is to be belived it looks like I'm getting 40-43ish mph around town. ;)

My Box is complemented by the 1.9 TDI:thumbup: I bet the 2.0 TDI is stunning.

I have one major regret about my Octy, I should have got one years ago. What an outstanding car, well done Skoda

im going to keep a eye on this thread. ive not had the chance to drive one of these, but im egging the boss to reg a demo one :)

everyone says they are the best auto boxes on the planet!!!

interesting about the leaving it in D while stopped. i thought any auto was best left in N while stopped for long periods stationary? does the DSG not have that draging feeling when leaving it in D while stopped?
