Preparing a road car for track day use

Featured Replies

To be able to enjoy to the maximum a track day using your road car it pays to spend some time in basic preparation. I will try and break down some of the simple checks and changes you can make to your car to enable you to get the most time on track during the day and to stay safe whilst driving harder than you would do on a public road.

Interior

Remove all loose objects from the car interior. If you have a fury dice or air freshener hanging from your coat hooks/mirror take it out. Empty your glove box of all unnecessary clutter and remove all the floor mats, especially the driver

Real Skoda, I've taken the liberty of copying your thread to FAQ. Left this one here for people to discuss at their leisure.

OK I've read through it fully now and will make some comments petinent to our day at Bruntingthorpe.

1. Brakes. There are only 2 maybe 3 places on the track that you need to brake which are fairly widely spaced. Brakes should last longer than you suggest as there are only 2 or 3 points where they will get use, 2 of which are lightish braking, the other being at the end of the straight. So no real worries on that score, it not like certain other tracks eg Donington where brakes do take a pounding.

2. Tyres. Bruntingthorpe is quite abrassive compared to a proper track, being primarily a concrete surface as opposed to tarmac. I reckon that at most you'll do 150 track miles that day (last time I did 153 but that was open pit). Nearside front took a pounding as all bar 2 corners were left handers.. 2 choices. Rotate the tyres at lunch time or knacker the nearside front and swap it for the spare at the end of the day.

3. Tyre pressures. Just use the settings suggested for high speed/high load as suggested in the handbook / inside the fuel filler cap and you'll be fine.

Otherwise, very good if a little daunting/ worrying for newcomers.

Any idea where my reply to this went??

:(

Josh, this is different thread to the one you replied to. That whole thread was deleted.

Good work Jon and realskoda, should help some people get their cars sorted for brunters.

Oh great.

My nice long post deleted.

Thanks!

If you have a fury dice or air freshener hanging from your coat hooks/mirror take it out.

That comment goes whether or not your going to the track day or not! If you have furry dice remove 'em-permanently

I suggest if you have "furry dice" you get down to your local urologist soon as poss!

Removing air freshners, etc, will affect your bhp, remember...

Are there facilities there to inflate/check tyres? What about tools, etc? Not been to a full trackday before so have no idea as what is present or not. I do know there is a petrol station just outside Bruntingthorpe, but are we allowed to get out and back in again?
