Is there a possible super-problem?

Featured Replies

Hey guys

Jasmine's got 141,000kms on her. I had her serviced at Autostar at 135,000kms, and the next is at 150,000kms. So far apparently, my engine seems to have sucked 80% of the oil in, 6000kms making it look like she might need a damned overhaul.

Or does it need one? I would have thought if there really was an issue with the pistons and piston rings and the cylinders, it would be most definitely noticeable in the performance of the car, from car to driver, and I haven't noticed any difference, she's still smooth like new.

The service engineer refilled it with 1 litre of oil, and told me to check again in 5000kms to see if it took it all in too, and if it did, there's a problem.

So why would she be drinking so much oil? I mean a whole fill of it in just 6000kms???

Please...someone help me clear my mind.

If you give it full throttle the back off very suddenly do you get a load of smoke out the exhaust? If it does then that is almost certainly rings.

Are you sure there is no leak, your engine should be good for 300,000 kms easy.

if the mechanic only put in 1ltr of oil and the oil level is now ok , the engine wasn't empty of oil , that could be just normal usage of oil , 1ltr in 4k miles on quite a high mileage car isn't unheard of

check for leaks and keep an eye out for blue smoke from the exhaust

Nope, no smoke from the exhaust at all. I know that if the engine is burning oil, the smoke is usually white.

No smoke.

Still quite confused about this.

White smoke is burning water

Blue smoke is burning oil

Black smoke is burning fuel (or unburnt fuel, whatever)

Oh really?? :o

OOps, my bad. I always thought white smoke was burning oil.

In any case, there is no smoke coming out of the car, so I don't understand why it's eaten up so much oil over a short period of mileage time.

Thanks Mikey.

Anyone? :(

Trust me, white smoke is definately water!:) Good luck finding the problem.

it's quite common to use a litre of oil in that many kilometers mil...

remeber the marks on the dipstick isn't the whole amount of oil inside the engine, the difference between the 2 marks is 1 litre, and there is 4.5litres in total...

my 2.0 uses about a litre of oil every 5000 miles, most likely being sucked into the air intake via the crankcase breather on overrun
