Citroen SM

Featured Replies

Car Magazine ran an article about this car in their October edition. I don't know what it is about certain 70's cars but I just find this car absolutely stunning.

The suspension was better than the DS, the V6 engine was designed by Maserati, and the handling and power was way ahead of the time for a premium coupe.

I so wish Citroen designed cars with the same presence as the SM nowadays.

The new C6 is pretty sexy, I like the C4 also.

I own a Citroen van, but 30,000 on a French car?

It had a starring role in the original Mean Machine with Burt Reynolds.

Cool car.

Used to like them - I think it was mostly the front.

Unfortunately, looking at the piccy I see how dated they are from some angles (not surprisingly).

But, yes, lack of interesting motors around :thumbdwn: - until you start paying a fortune.

I remember Clarkson saying that if the french and italians get together to make a meal you know it'll be fantastic. If they get together to make a car you should start to run very quickly :)

Unique bit of kit this - effectively mid engined because the mazzer lump was set so far back, and with steering that stopped all kickback when you pressed on but still lightened up for parking. I gather that even routine servicing will set you back thousands though - IIRC a cam chain replacement service costs over £1500 and you're looking at about 8k for a new engine if it blows (which is entirely likely) and if you can find one.

and the headlights turn around the corners too.... some modern day car manufacturers who have this seem to think they invented it! lol...

the engine is a peach... citroen owned masarati at the time the SM was made...... I'd have one... It would suprise some motors, an old 70's car going 140 mph! lol...

You see, not that is a PROPER car :)

Way ahead of it's time. There are 2 in Blackpool, although i've seen niether in a while.

I always had a soft spot for these. Saw a few out in France over the years but cannot remember seeing more than one in the UK.

A couple of the the latest Citroen products are sort of funky looking, the C4 two door looks good and the C6 is an imposing and slightly eccentric beast. I would have one for long motorway journeys. It is now all appearance though. Long gone are the days of the Light 15 / DS / SM with their years ahead innovative engineering.

Chris

I had a CX GTI Turbo, which I suppose was its baby brother, sort of.

The best car I ever had.

It only broke down on alternate days, but was sub 7 secs. 0-60, and 140 mph on a magic carpet.

For an old tractor engine pushing over 2 tonnes, it was awesome.

I had 3 BX's my fave being the 16v. That was quite quick in it's day.I used to like Citroens, but they are just cheap nast cack these days.

I had a two litre BX too (sadly not the 160bhp one) and it was great fun.... had no third gear thoght! lol.....

the c6 is a great car, as long as your not buying it of course ;) they have taken lots from the older exec cars like SM and DS.

the v6 HDi engine is as smooth as anything. the the seation is like 1st class airplane standards. i drove one about for a long weekend and loved it. but when pushed round corners it does float about a bit! but thats not what its about, its about comfort. i sold one to a guy and he does 250,000 in about 4 years, so the cars gotta be comfy. he loves the c6 he bought :)

Thats some mileage car must be worth £5 when it comes to trade in

Drove the C6 2.7 Td at the motorshow at excel last year, Fantastic ride with active suspension and Auto box, Big leather electric seats. The best bit was the Headup display

The SM - maybe not the most beautiful car Citroën ever built, but unforgettable. I saw one o the few remaining in Berlin last year.

Adjusting the three twin-port carburettors is said to have been pure hell, though!

In the 70's I drove a GS (gas suspension, air-cooled engine, bathroom scales speedo) until corrosion completely consumed the bodywork. It was (in its way) also unforgettable...

My family used to have a bx. At the time, I thought it was the most embarassing thing ever. Second only to a Skoda perhaps!
