I reckon it would be less. An Aston Martin can stop from 140mph in 245ft which is 70ft under the distance the highway code says it will take to stop from 70mph. 500m is 1650ft or 5 football pitches. thats a long way are you sure it wasn't 500ft

Nobody said your reaction speed would improve.:rolleyes: It does though. Most formula 1 drivers have a reaction speed which is equal to or greater than a fighter pilots. That isnt something natural in the hormones. Its due to training and getting to know how a car feels on the limit and knowing when its about to break it

What also changes is the reaction you carry out. You also observe a road differently. The Police, MOD and other various organisations dont pump millions of pounds into driver training each year if its a load of crap.

Otherwise what your saying is you could get in a Formula 1 car and lap a track the same as Michael Schumacher. Or jump into a porsche and lap the Top Gear test track as fast as The Stig.

172 mph = approx 252 ft per sec

Assuming 1G deceleration (32 ft per sec per sec) will take nearly 8 seconds to stop.

Distance taken = average velocity multiplied by time

Av velocity = 126 ft per sec

So distance approx 1000 ft (without thinking time).

It's nothing to do with reactions. It's good observation and planning ahead so that you don't get into a situation which requires a fast reaction speed....

Another analogy - a top tennis will not have better reactions than an ordinary human by your reckoning.

Andre Agassi had phenomenal reaction times because he taught himself initially by hitting a ball against a wall.

If you or I stood on a tennis court - up against a pro - we'd have barely moved our arm by the time the ball had gone by. let alone stretch it ut, move our legs etc.

So assuming a reasonably uniform deceleration, I would imagine the 911 could stop in well under 500m.....

But, being into you know what :P , you are also bearing in mind stopping distances go up proprtionate to the square of the increase - ooh er, not sure that sounded right.

997 turbo 60mph 99 feet

9 times that(180mph) is 891 feet and then pop in your 'untrained = prat ' stopping distance.....

just looked it up a porsche 911 can stop from 75mph in 66.9m or 220.77ft. so even if we treble that distance to take into account more than double the speed its still only 200.7m or 662.31ft so i reckon they meant 500ft not 500m

And 500m is about 1500ft? Average thinking time is 0.6 seconds I think so it should still fall well below 1500ft? Unless the guy is on his phone, changing the CD or under the influence.....

Although it will also depend whether the chap has the Ceramic brake option or not! :rofl:

IIRC guys - you double your speed you have 4 times the kinetic energy = 4 times stopping distance.

To get the kinetic energy differential from 75mph to 172 mph you would need to calculate 172/ 75 and then square that figure - and I've already done too much maffs tonight.

Unless you insist.

60mph to 180mph isnt 9 times its only 3 and as ive said earlier brake technology has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years. As have tyres. A mitsubishi evo 6 can go from 100mph - 0 in 2.5 seconds which equates to 196ft (taking into account deceleration and thinking distance)

The highway code distances are all wrong. Topgear did a test using a Focus 1.6 and at 70 mph it stopped well short of the 315ft

5.3 times the distance at 75 mph = 1100 ft for Mater's Porsche 911 figures.
