172mph speeder faces jail

Featured Replies

He would have been let off if he had said that he was testing the capabilities of the vehicle, it seems to work for the police at any rate, this paticular fine upstanding and responsible driver was completely endorced for doing 90MPH in a residential 30 zone with no lights on etc....

Main difference being that police having a legal exemption from speed limits when it's required...no such exemption is in place for members of the public.

wrong, they have to stick to them to unless by adhering to them would hinder the progress of the vehicle whilst it is being used for the purposes of that service. I.e. providing the police car is being used on police business, it is exempt from speed limits (going for chips does not count…!).

Please, explain how this isn't the same as "police having a legal exemption from speed limits when it's required"... :)

And the question is who would you feel safer being driven round by? A chap who just shuffles cars round at the rental depot, or someone who's had training to be able to drive safely and competently at these sort of speeds?

Apart from this guy wasn't doing police business, he was joyriding his new motor including driving though vilages doing 90 with no lights and sirens, if a kid or someone with poor visablity of nutter drivers were to step out then I for one would not like to clean up the mess.

Police can speed with the blues and two's but otherwise they *should* obey the traffic laws.

Frankly I would much sooner be doing 170 on a motorway / duel with a central res then 90 on a narrow single carrageway in a residential area.

Apart from this guy wasn't doing police business

The court disagreed, otherwise he wouldn't have been cleared.

Police can speed with the blues and two's

This is also incorrect, there is no obligation to use sirens and lights.

Do you have a link to this 90mph in a 30 zone? I can't find any reference to it in the articles....

16th? Paragraph is the closest I can see:

But the Police Federation defended the driving of Pc Milton, who is also known to have travelled at 120mph in a 60mph zone and at more than 60mph in a 30mph zone.

i read on the bbc site about the 90 in a 30, it was just before the retrial iirc

Yeah I had a look back in the archives and found this:

Pc Milton is also accused of driving at 100mph in a 60mph zone and 60mph in 30mph zones.

It was also interesting that all the people reviewing the video taken from inside the car recorded a verdict that the driving was at no point dangerous, which would suggest that he was doing these speeds in appropriate places rather than hacking round a housing estate/narrow residential street as suggested earlier in the thread....
