Sentence not long enough - driver inexperienced driving at such speed, the number of people he could have 'taken out'. :thumbdwn:

If he'd have had a gun he'd have got 5 yrs IIRC for possession.

He didnt hit anyone. Had that happened, I reckon the punishment (beyond the undoubtedly BAD outcome) would have been very much more severe

bothered? he was speeding on an empty bit of dual carriageway at night and no one got hurt. he is/was obviously capable of driving at that speed as he is still alive :D

it was probably a lot less dangerous than the people that speed at "only" 50mph-60mph in a 30mph zone.

:iagree:

muppet, bet his boss wasnt too pleased either!

he was speeding on an empty bit of dual carriageway at night .

Mitigating to some extent - if true, but there is no mention of these facts in the BBC report (or an older one).

And, yes, 50 to 60 in a 30 when people are around is lunacy.

i agree to a point, but what if it it was someone you knew driving up there if he had lost it and crashed into them at nearly 100mph? not pretty. speeding is silly no matter where or when (and no im not saying i dont bend the speed limits once in a whie ;)), but that sort of speed is shear lunacy and should be kept onto the track. besides how could he be skilled enough to drive at that speed, he nicked the car from the company he worked at as a delivery driver, hardly the qualitifcations to drive that fast lol!

Unfortunately the latter seems to be the most common, and also often without a license, MOT and/or insurance

They don't say "drive it like you stole it" for nothing!

Agreed.

+ it was a dual carrigeway i.e. less room for avoidance etc

+ if the road had not been empty, do you think that would have stopped him / caused him to slow - until it was far far too late to a totally untrained eye.

I think the judge and the guy from ROSPA summed it up nicley.

He is damm lucky he wasn't done for TWOC, or should that be TW.AT, cos he is one.......

Here here. A sensible post.

 If you drive at that speed, on the public road, whether its at night or not and your name is Michael Shumacher. It makes no difference, you should go to jail and be banned. END OF!!

There is no doubt going to be some twist in this tale... No doubt he is going to be taken on as a (off road) promotion driver for porsche or maybe he will be interview on topgear.

How did they catch him at 170mph plus... surely not by following him

Apparently he was caught in a routine speed trap, which makes me wonder if it wasn't committed in the middle of the night after all....

Chris

Hmm, it was funny how the TWOC wasn't really mentioned as a connection to the sentencing. The BBC just concentrated on the speed. When the media did the drive at about 60mph then speeded it up by 3 times to show how it must've appeared it didn't actually look that bad. No excuse for him making two irresponsible decisions though.

Maybe it will send a message out, maybe it wont. One things for sure he probably won't do it again and doesn't look like he will cope very well with his few weeks inside. Oh well, s*** 'appens :D

Hmmm. This i dont agree with. I like a lot of people THOUGHT i could drive at High speed and handle a car. However i then spent 12 weeks learning to drive at high speed safely for my job and it became apparant within the first 2 Days just how dangerous i was before completing the course. You cannot drive safely at High Speed unless you have been Trained no matter how many years driving experience you have.

Agreed, am just confused to your use of the past tense :P

they had to get a unit a few miles down the road to block the road off iirc from an earlier press release on the TVP site.

The bit where they clocked him is a straightish long stretch where you can easily exceed the limit, but i dont think "honing his skills" or "i didnt realise i slipped over the limit" would work

I've definitely got the message - don't do 172mph on a dual carriageway.

Of course, driving a fabia that's a little unlikely anyway...

the TWOC charge was dropped by CPS at the last hearing in exchange he pleaded guilty and they accepted that the car wasnt stolen (even through it was borrowed and he was insured).

I've definitely got the message - don't do 172mph on a dual carriageway.

OR don't get caught :D

Hmmmm Germay here we come then. Either that or possibly a trip to bruntingthorpe on the main straight!

load of bolocks. he has been made an example of..... sure a big fine.. some points... but when you get less for beating up old ladies how can you take it seriously..

170+ on empty dual carr is nothing compared to 40 in 30 past a school and 9 / 3.30.

Agree with some of what you say - but still have seen no mention of empty dual carriageway and dead of night etc.

Plus, he had a passenger ........
