172mph speeder faces jail

Featured Replies

of course there is a way he could stop quicker using the same tyre/brake combo and without increasing the co-efficient of friction of both

he hits a feckin' wall........:D

Mark

Depends how heavy the wall is, its rigidity, how much of it he takes with him, etc:rofl:

Is that what they call lateral thinking - or Canadian thinking - or mebbe alcohol :rolleyes:

Oops, time difference here. Feck, more equations to look up again.

Hi, Chief, you OK ?

BTW Chris - just what is it you're on.

Want some - must be pretty fine stuff from your very last post :thumbup: :thumbup:

Ace.

Not writing reports. I am currently supposed to be developing and authoring a management system to comply with the requirements of the aerospace sector management standard AS9100. Effing boring I can tell you. I am on a mission to make it the shortest, thinnest and simplest AS9100 accredited management system manual on the planet. Reckoning on not more than 35 pages at the moment which would be a lot better than the average company's several hundred or even several thousand page tome.

Not on anything at the moment. Although in a past life I may have sampled an assortment of powerful stimulants and psychoactives and the effects never fully wore off;)

Thank F for that - for a while I thought you'd been assimiliated by the Mongrellians :D

But am pretty sure you'll have read it............

Hey, don't knock the psychoactives :D :D :D

The whole argument here started because i said that it would not take 1650ft or 500m to stop a porsche 911 from 172mph.

985ft is prolly about right. However i still stand by the fact that if i brake to the best of my ability at 30mph then do it at 60mph i dont think the stopping distance will have quadrupled. I'm going to have to try it this weekend now just to see

This next bit is just a play on words. But still raises a point.

One website i looked at said a ford focus stopped at 30mph in 10m. the same car then stopped fro 60mph at 40m. (let me finish anonymouse before you start:P )

Now with a bit of fancy maths they said that the stopping distane had increased in length by 4 times the original 30mph distance. However that is wrong. If the car stopped at 10m at 30mph then stopped at 40m at 60mph then (with a bit of seven year old level maths:P ) that is an increase of 30m. which is only 3 times the original stopping distance. i.e 10 + 30 = 40.

Now i want someone to work out how long it will take a car to stop if it is travelling at 250mph using chris gb theory. then i will shock you with what the actual result is

Who cares about the theory - show me the Ford Focus that does 250mph :rofl:

Now where's my cheque book :D

Chris

well using DVLA standards. a car doing 60mph takes 73m to stop

so if stopping distance is quadrupled if speed doubles then it means the following

120mph = 292m (73m x 4) or 963.6ft

240mph = 1168m (292 x 4) or 3854.4ft

So can someone explain how a Bugatti Veyron can stop from 253mph in 454m or 1498.2ft if these DVLA distances are correct??

ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........

You're at skool, then, Chris ? :rolleyes:

So can someone explain how a Bugatti Veyron can stop from 253mph in 454m or 1498.2ft if these DVLA distances are correct??

For the Veyron at 250mph:

250mph = 367 ft/sec

Losing speed at 1G would be 32.16 ft/s^2

So 367 / 32.16 = 11.4 sec to stop.

Average speed will be 367 / 2 = 183.5 ft/s

183.5ft/s x 11.4s = 2092ft or 637.6m

Now the Veyron, like anything else moving that quickly will have a huge amount of drag from air resistance, to the extent that when the driver takes his clog off the gas pedal, there is probably a braking force close to or in excess of 1G before he hits the brakes. This sends the avearage speed calculation out of the window because the loss of speed will not be linear any more. The higher the speed, the greater the rate of deceleration.

The Highway code distances are based on a Morris Minor or similar. The problem is that the figures are not meant to be factual representations, merely a rough indicator for educational purposes. However, we should consider that there are plenty of cars on the road that will only be able to stop in the highway code distances or even longer. poor quality, excessively worn or incorrectly inflated tyres, old tired braking systems. knackered dampers, all present and incorrect on so many cars.

Add to that the fact that many drivers don't know how to use the brakes and would not utilise the ABS in an emergency because they never get to practice with it and don't like the noise. True story from a friend who does know better: An IAM day out at a test facility in Essex a couple of years ago had a high speed braking area for the use of the group. Of the attendees (lots but don't know how many) only three people used the brakes properly, the rest scared to press the pedal hard enough for an emergency stop.

But using ABS is unlikely to result in the shortest stopping distance and I will always try and perform an emergency stop by holding the brakes at the point just before the ABS triggers....

Chris

Chris, if I actually make it to a meet that you're at too would you be brave enough to come for a ride in the passenger seat of my car? I'm being serious, I'm thinking about signing up for some advanced driving but would like to know how carp I am first :D

Chris

Apparently this lot were not slowing down remotely quickly. I use the ABS rarely as often I find a slightly better slowing down without triggering it. Optimum seems to be when the occasional wheel triggers just a little. However, not all ABS systems are equal, the one on the Fabia is easy to improve on when the road is smooth and camber change free. The MR2 system actually smokes the tyres without letting them lock. It is very brutal on hot Hankook RS-2s and I don't think I can beat it, I have tried.

A friend with a Focus was in the outside lane to watch what was going on with the MR2 ABS when I first got it. When we nailed the brakes, he want past me, ABS on, like he was not even braking. We were both shocked at the difference in retardation.

Now if only the posters had followed you ever-wise, advice, Chris...

Power (Speed + Strength - Increase the amount of energy one has, both mentally and physically.

Durability - the ability to last longer and to stay focused.

.. it could continue virtually indefinitely, and then you'd have to wake periodically, raise your head from the desk and contribute :P
