What's the max I can chip my furby vrs up to without changing the clutch?

Featured Replies

I'm getting my car chipped by Impossible on Wednesday.

They're saying it can be chipped up to 185bhp without any probs with the clutch, but i've heard you get problems above 150bhp?

What is the max i can chip my fabia vrs up to without changing the clutch?

Also does anyone know where i can get some callipers/pads for the 312mm brake conversion that aren't rediculously expensive?

Any help would be great! Cheers

All depends on the type of map...if the power comes in a big rush the clutch will start slipping soon enough, if they can give you a nice steady torque curve it may be OK to go to 180

depends on how you drive it, actually use the torque and you'll kill it but thats true of a standard car too.

Main thing that comes into that 'how long is a piece of string question?': How you drive the car.

I had 2 maps, both from really good tuners - one would rush in and the other was smooth. Both maps would slip the clutch if you booted it low down. Driving at higher revs, dropping a gear like a petrol before booting it spares the clutch. Clutches get hurt worse with higher torque not so much bhp. When I swapped out my OEM clutch it was still in perfect condition.

It's not the power, it's the torque. limit it to around 310 and you should be OK for a while.

As above.

Its the torque you should be carefull with, thats what eats up your clutch! A strong remap on a 130 PD can top 300 lb/ft and your standard clutch wont like that much.

how much is a reasonable uprated clutch? i am in the same situation!

I'm surprised how well my standard clutch is surviving all the abuse I give it.:D

don't abuse the clutch and you can still enjoy a pretty aggressive remap. One of the maps I have was RR'd on a UK spec Fabia vRS at 187.5bhp.....

uprated clutches are expensive, around £500 for just an uprated friction plate upto a grand for uprated pressure plate, friction plate and flywheel.

You should ask Wardy. I know he's just had a new Sachs organic unit fitted to his vRS.

You should be more worried about the increase in torque killing the clutch rather than the increase in bhp. In the case of torque l'm sure l've heard maximum figures of 300lb/ft for standard Fab vRS clutches?

I think Wardys old Beeza pd130 was running about 180bhp and 300lb/ft without too many problems to the standard friction material.

Hello! ;)

Can't recall what torque figure the Ibiza was putting out now, but never had any clutch slip issues. Was probably around 285-290. Was a running Superchips remap and had a nice smooth curve to it. Made it very driveable.

Can only reiterate what's already been said - be kind to the clutch by not asking it to handle bundles of torque low down the range, and you should be fine. A map customised to the car will also help.

Thanks for all the help guys. One last question - How much should i expect to pay for a re-map? He's charging £380, but i've heard people say they've only paid between £100-200?

Length of a piece of string? Twice the distance from the middle to the end! Boom. Boom.

Generally, with mapping, you get what you pay for.

IP are very good, and you'll get a quality map which is nice and smooth and he can do it so the torque's not too high to protect the clutch.

I had a Sachs organic clutch and pressure plate fitted to my Fabia vRS at IP and the whole lot including parts and labour was just under £700. It's expensive, not just because of the parts, but the gear box has to come out to change the clutch and you pretty much have to lift the engine out of the bay to have enough room.

So not cheap, but my new remap is well above 300 ft.lb but no slippage at all :D
