Aldi badge engineering

Aldi often have, what seems to be, excellent specification electrical ‘special offers. They are never brand names, but go under either Medion or Tevion. I have in the past bought a Tevion bluetooth adaptor, which works very well and was less than half the price of normal retail outlets. But that was cheap and worth the risk.

I assume that the equipment is made by others: I wondered anyone knows whose kit they use; and as a general question, is their stuff worth buying?

As a cross-link to the ‘recommend laptop’ thread, Aldi have a £479.99 offer this week. Although I’m not in the market for one of these, it would be an interested example to judge their value

Also, is there a web site which links ‘supermarket’ product names with the actual manufacture origins?

I don't know of any specific site linking budget supermarket electrical brands with manufacture origins, but what I do know is that the majority of the low budget freeview boxes on sale in the UK are manufactured with components made by the Turkish electrical giant, Vestel.

If you also check out the Alba Group website, they show just how many goods they manufacture for the high street.

I also have a 2 year old Ferguson 15" portable telly. Now, the Ferguson name died out years ago following the split of Thorn EMI, but DSG (who own Dixons, Currys etc.) sold products under the Ferguson brand recently and exclusively. I saw my telly also sold as a Grundig and I believe Grundig up until fairly recently owned a factory in South Wales but sold it. So, my Ferguson branded telly, which says 'assembled in the UK' must have come out of Grundig's factory.

Sorry to ramble on, but you can see that brand names and the origin of manufacture are pretty difficult to trace!

I have had both a desktop and a laptop which I still have from Aldi. Had a problem with the desktop they collected and returned. Good service. They are based in Swindon. Friends have had kit from them , no problem. Good tech.service.

I tend to be a bit cautious over the supermarket budget brands - brought a Tevion world band pocket radio in the summer - works ok apart from the dubious LCD were the display sticks showing 189Mhz - fixed this though by giving a good tap on the side. Dont know what the Tevion DAB radio is like, but if its like the Asda Onn brand radio, which is a pile of rubbish.

Vestel use to supply the internals for supermarket branded CRT's TVs too

Alba is quite an historical name dating back to the 30's, Bush is also part of the Alba group, although originally they were two separate companies, the Bush company of today isn't the same one of years ago - just the brand name and logo are used. Recently did see a new video recorder with the Pye brand name.

Own branded stuff tends to be last years model from whichever 'big name' company offers the best deal.

No way of telling what's what easily, you just need to be good at looking for signs of good/poor quality & making a judgement I guess.

My Aldi bought, Delta badged, Combi microwave is just brilliant and cost less than half the equivalent Panasonic.

We've a lot of Aldi/Lidl stuff in the house, microwaves, tools etc. My folks have TVs and other gadgets and it's all been excellent stuff.

I've heard from other sources that the back up is also good and warranties are honored with few problems.

I own a Medion surround sound dvd player, had it for around 6 years and plays every type of disc i know and own including divx. I was led to beleive it is a rebadged Phillips brand.

My current desktop is a 5 year old Medion bought in PC World. It's run without any major problems throughout that time.

I believe Medion themselves are based in the Netherlands but couldn't be 100% sure on that.

me Mam's just bought said £479 laptop. It seems a damn good spec for the money. i used to have a Medion desktop and it was a commendable machine.

Hello all at the Skoda Forum and community!

I have recently bought a Skoda Felicia (P Reg)and it goes like a racing car!

It has developed a fault though. It will not tick over when the engine is cold but will when the engine is warm. I have tried to gain some clues from the Haynes Manual but failed. My Question is- what is the sensor that tells the injector to choke the fuel so that it will tick over at cold?

Best wishes to you all out there!

Hey Paul, You might be better posting here, Felicia, Fun and Forman - BRISKODA - The Skoda Forum and Community

I don't think you get the best responses posting in an Aldi thread ;)

Returning to this, Aldi have a "7MP Super Slim Digital Camera" for £79.99 as the weekend's lead offer. It has the following:

7MP CCD Sensor

2.5" TFT LCD Display

3 × Optical Zoom

4 × Digital Zoom

Video mode

Voice Recording

Self Timer

Flash

19 pre-set image capturing modes including: panorama, night, portrait, sport and snow

Pictbridge compatible

High quality aluminium casing

Is it any good; and does anyone recongise the source manufacturer?

Ive had a laptop from Aldi (Medion) and it knacked up about 3 days after getting it. It had several problems as soon as I booted it up, so emailed Medion UK and 2 years later still have not got any replies off them from the numerous emails Ive sent. Lucily I took it back to the store and got a full refund.

I have had several electronic "gadgets" from them since, and almost all of them have not worked. Personally, I have lost faith in their products as it seems to me they get the rejected crap that no one else wants the headache of dealing with.

However, my brother has a desktop PC (Medion again) he bought from Aldi about 6 or more years ago, and it is still going strong and of a relativly good spec.
