Don't! I remember many years ago dismantling the thumbshifters on my mountain bike, greasing them, putting them back together, and wondering why they wouldn't stay in gear! Took me ages to realise that they worked on friction so didn't work if greased! In my defence, m'lud, I was about 12 at the time...! :doh:
