How do I know if I have Xenons?

Featured Replies

Is there a simple way to check if the car has Xenons or not (other than they're brighter!!!!).

Best way is to check near the interior light dimmer, if you have one to level the headlamps then you don't have xenons

Headlamp washers in the bumper?

If so you will have xenons.

:thumbdwn: Nope, I have washers, but not Xenons.

Not necessarily true...you can have washers without xenons. However xenons have to be self-levelling.

When they switch on, they sort of ‘fade-up’ in intensity and sometimes, depending on how you have parked, the lights point down then up again when you first switch them on (they are self levelling as Vimto 2000 says)

Ahhh, I stand corrected :o

Learn something new every day :P

People keep flashing you thinking you're on main beam ... :D

(when in reality you're just blinding them with your Xenons)

Use your car for a week. If both headlights still work then I highly doubt you have xenons :finger:

Theres's no mistaking xenons for normal headlights. Look for the golf ball type lenses first (although double-optic headlights have these too and are often mistaken for xenons)

Xenon headlights give off a distinctive blue hue and the light given off by xenons is also much closer to that of natural daylight as opposed to the artificial yellow hue you get from normal headlights.

Mine have done nearly 30K with no probs…..oh lummy, that’s put the kibosh on them now.

Or somebody fitted suitable bulbs that give off the same colour light behind the projector lenses on the car with headlight washers.

I think the beam adjusting switch is the most reliable way of doing it tbh.

... and the self-levelling 'dance' when you switch them on.

Do your main beams seem like a couple of candles by comparison?

You have that too? I've only had two people flash me and both times I or the other car were not on the level e.g. one of us was coming over the brow of a hill. Even normal lights will look brighter if you catch them on the wrong level so I thought tough.

I do find people drift towards the centre line as I approach, I suppose an effect of them staring at lights they don't see that often.

No, I don't have it, because I don't have Xenons! :D

look at the back of the light unit for extra plumming and ballast's, but the level switch is the first place to look as mentioned.

Put your main headlights and foglights on (when parked - not while driving when not foggy!) and if your foglights look yellow in comparison you have xenons.

That and the self levelling test and the absence of a headlight leveller should be enough to go on.

And compare the startup to This

Yep, it was pointed out Twice above, thanks for the effort though ;)

Mine did 35k with no problems. Now they go wrong regularly :(

the colour of the light is denoted by the K value of the lamps, xenon lamps can rand from white/blue/purple and a few other colours depending on their range :)

Yeah.....If your dazzling everyone coming towards you, then you've got the daft headlamps!

If they are OEM and set up correctly then 9 times out of 10 this won't happen.

I'm dazzled more often by misaligned halogens than I ever am with xenon lights.

Well yes, but then you can fit 100W main beams to either car to remove the candle issue. ;)

anyone got that czech site url where you enter the VIN into and it tells you what your car has? maybe it could be done this way instead?
