Broadband Speed

Featured Replies

Prompted by the report into slow ADSL speeds ont Gadget Show last night, I thought I'd test my Virgin Broadband cable connection.

It's listed as 4Meg, but comes in at 3.7Meg download speed. Not too bad considering some of the others are giving half the speed they advertise.

I'm currently considering a switch to Sky Surf Speak and See, so anyone living in Sheffield with Sky Broadband, please post the results here!

If your on virgin try this one it's way more accurate, its held on virgin servers.

Yours just told me that I got a 3 meg connection.

When I am currently downloading at 25meg on virgin:D:D

Cheers! Average speed, 3.87MEG. So about the same really.

Wow just checked mine via the link & got 2.2meg, not bad as I am on a 2 meg deal.

will keep checking to see if it changes later on when it gets busy.:o

not too bad, we pay for a 8meg 20:1 line.. we normally get around 7000 down and 725 up. Plus that test was done with about 12 other machines currently on the network

On my 20mb line I get full speed during the day , about 80% most evenings , then I bounce off the limiter and get dropped to 25% for the next 4 hours :)

Here's another useful speed test site: Numion - YourSpeed and SiteSpeed

I'm with Zen's 8MB service and usually get around 6MB which I don't think is too bad. Luckily I'm not too far from the exchange.

I find the 3rd party sites crap for speed tests The link i gave was given to me by an NTL tech a while back when we were trouble shooting connection speeds.

I have always got a few clicks over the package limit with virgin/ntl.

As zoidberg says evening can be a bit slow (well 15 meg) but after 11 pm I usually get about 23 to 25 meg, so 25% free.

This equates to about 30 mins for a dvd or 15 seconds for an album roughly:thumbup::thumbup:

surely a third party site is going to give a more accurate result of true speed than one hosted by your ISP which is all the same network?

My work one lol202056061.png

I find this site only gives about the same at home for some reason

I don't know why but the 3rd party ones just yield duff results at home

My work connection.

1st 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps

2nd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps

3rd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps

4th 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 20024 Kbps, 19.56 Mbps

And heres the other one

To repeat this test from the source server click here.

with the numion one we are at about 2.8meg and with the other we are also 2.8meg so i'd say tehy are quite accurate :)

we are on an upto 8meg line but not super close to our exchange and the exchange hasn;t been unbundled or what ever its called :)

I tried the simple speadtest on my N95 over a HSDPA connection on T-Mobile. The average speed came out at 4mb according to that.

Just did a BT speedtest and got this:

IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 6880 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1884 kbps

Simple speed test gives:

1st 512K took 2250 ms = 227.6 KB/sec, approx 1875 Kbps, 1.83 Mbps

2nd 512K took 2000 ms = 256 KB/sec, approx 2109 Kbps, 2.06 Mbps

3rd 512K took 2000 ms = 256 KB/sec, approx 2109 Kbps, 2.06 Mbps

4th 512K took 2000 ms = 256 KB/sec, approx 2109 Kbps, 2.06 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2051 Kbps, 2 Mbps

Methinks I have a problem with my Plusnet connection!

Er yeah, I suppose that would be good idea.;)

Simple Speed Test

Mine just came back at 6.8 mbs but when I use other testers I usually get around 4-5 mbs. I don’t suppose some of these speed testers are made b the same people who make Rolling Roads (I am sure you know which ones I mean)

Just ran a few more back to back tests

5.6 mps downstream on thinkbroadband

6.0 mps on ZDNet

6.9 mps on Plus Net

Afaik The ntl tech told me it was held on there server so would give the mist honest result for a Virgin/Ntl connection
