Wouldn't hurt, Your basically weatherproofing the connector & insulating the contacts from their neighbours

Does this work on any non VAG cars?

I.e. Mondeo diesels? dont suppose it can do any harm, might have to get me a tube and play about.

Thing is that a tuner mate of mine said that he suspects that VAG have known about the MAF connector contacts for some time. The higher end VAG cars have gold-plated connectors on the MAF sensor.

Be nice to take a tube along to any Brisky meets and lube up the company - it'd be a really nice thing to do, lol

This may be a silly question, I am a complete noob... as I keep saying... to the "under bonnet" stuff. Would this work on a Fabia 1.4MPi? Where is the MAF? Once again.... befuddled by the easy stuff...

I think only turbo'd cars have MAFs. Either way, it'll be sticking out of the air ducting just as it comes out of the filter box. You can see it about 1/5 of the way down on the very right-hand edge of this pic (with the orange seal of the filter element seeming to come out of it at an angle):

This might be me being very thick but how the hell do you get the connector off???? I've tried on both our cars and cannot get it to budge one bit...... Am i missing something totally obvious???

There's a wee tab on the underside of the connector just behind the wiring, Press that and the connector will release:thumbup:

Doh...... I found the tab when i went back down for another go after my last post..... I had been squeezing the connector up/down instead of pulling the tab at the end towards me. :rolleyes:

Both cars now done..... Furby 2 i can't notice much differance as that is standard apart from the PD160 intake and Green filter..... Furby 1 with the Dragon box PD160 intake and Green filter does seem a lot smoother as it pulls through the rev range.

First let me confess I'm no expert - my physics/electronics stopped at 'A' level many years ago. From what I can gather from the reading I've done, this works on a much subtler level than simply weather proofing or improving electrical contact (the grease is non conducting so that won't be the case anyway).

The MAF is a delicate measuring device, constantly sending electrical signals to the ECU that relate to the amount of air entering the engine. If these signals get disrupted in any way, the engine will not operate at optimum.

Now the theory. When two or more electrical conductors exist within a certain distance of each other, when there is insufficient insulation and when there is enough potential difference, arcing or current leakage can occur. In our application this is obviously going to be on a minute scale but can be significant enough to partially corrupt the signal to the ECU. The best way to prevent this current leakage in our case is to improve the electrical insulation between the contacts. This is achieved by the addition of a di-electric compound which is an extremely poor conductor compared to the air it replaces. Hopefully the result is that the ECU now receives a less corrupted signal from the MAF and can provide more accurate fueling to the engine based on these signals.

Disclaimer: The above is only my interpretation based on limited knowledge of the subject but the fact remains, this mod can work!

BTW I treated my fathers Octy 2.0TDI DSG yesterday afternoon. Returning from his 25 mile commute this evening he reported that there was a noticeable improvement in throttle response - another convert!

I went to Maplin's today and thought I would try it. I am very impressed, smoother, quieter and no smoke :thumbup: So went back in and bought another tube :)

A MAF replaced the good old AFM or air flow meter. Instead of the incoming air volume being measured by how far it moves a flap connected to a potentiometer (volume kn0b) like on AFM's, a MAF measures the same thing by heating a wire over which the incoming air passes. The ECU can measure how much voltage is required to keep this wire at a set temperature as the resistance of the wire will change with temperature and air flow and so can figure out the volume and density of the incoming air.

They're more accurate than AFM's were but far more delicate.

They're also fitted to non turbo cars too.....my 320i had one.

Well, there is another convert here, I used some Silkolene silicone grease on the maf connection yesterday, and to be honest, I expected it to be snake oil.

Popped the key in and it fired and idled perfectly, and yes, the throttle reponse on my PD140 DSG is improved and the slightly lumpy idle it had has gone.

Will notice this tomorrow I think when the car is a bit colder than it being warm.

Aerosol worked for me - the cold start lumpiness disappeared immediately.

How much gunk are people applying? Is it a thin line along the front of the connector (the red plastic surface) or basically filling the whole connector?

blob in each metal connector I think

i put a small blob on each of the connectors and a small amount in the female section of the connector.

Dunno for sure but I'd imagine that aerosol could lose its effect with time...
