Cage mod - wow!

Featured Replies

Christmas came a little early for my ageing PD100 with me treating her to a Dragon tuning box 3 weeks ago. The improvement was immediate and dramatic. Soon after, I treated her further to her first taste of Millers Sport 4 diesel treatment - she seamed to like that as well . In my continued quest for cheap kicks, today I made the trip to Maplins to purchased some di-electric silicon grease and further treated the old girl to the MAF plug 'cage mod' (do a search). Well, I don't know whether it was that last little treat or if the ECU had finally got to grips with the Dragon box, but my test drive 'round the block' turned out to be a 20 (s)mile, drag racin' joyride! She's going like a rocket!

I know I've introduced too many variables in the last 3 weeks to draw any true conclusions but that last little trick with the MAF plug seamed to unleash the full potential of the PD100 + Dragon box.

The ASR was working overtime in 2nd and occasionally 3rd. Then I managed to do battle with a MkV Golf 2.0TDI (PD140) and 20-110mph was on his tail the whole time :D - don't think he was too happy.

Basically, I've fallen in love with the car all over again - knowing my luck, I'll have broke it before christmas :P!

On your Private Track of course ;)

A new convert - great, lol.

Been trying to promote the cage mod for some time now- it really works - try it - you'll love it!

Anyone care to post a "how to" with pics :D

I think it's just an "unplug MAF, slap some di-electric grease on the contacts, reconnect again" Might have to look into it myself although my MAF has been reliable lately.

It's like Jason says:

1 unplug MAF socket

2 apply di-electric silicone grease to female terminals

3 plug/unplug a few times to clean contacts

4 apply a little more grease

5 re-attatch plug

6 close bonnet

If you do a search, it's been covered here before several times - I think Basil introduced it to briskoda. It was also big news over on seatcupra.net for a while, but this is where it all started Stumbling mystery solved. MAF! - TDIClub Forums and IIRC there are some pics there somewhere.

PS Jason - you finished with my pipe yet? :P

Is it Servisol Item No. RE90X?

Yep, thats the Maplin p/n for the 50g tube that I used. You can get cheaper on ebay but when I looked that was for smaller disposable (one shot) type sachets. When I get time, I'll grease up all the other critical electrical connections around the car as a precaution.

Nice one I'll give them a bell to check stock availability, They open at 11

If you're referring to the PD160 one, then no. :P But I do have it's replacement ready for fitting. ;)

On your Private Track of course ;)

Oh yeah.. J5.. keep trying ;)

Just rung my local Maplins and had an aerosol put back for me. Going to collect it in a couple of hours.

They had no tubes, but I'm more of an aerosol type of guy! :D

Just got the last tube in Edinburgh put aside. thumbup:

Jason, be carefull with the aerosol, and allow any solvents/carriers to evaporate/disperse before re-introducing the plug anywhere near the MAF. It's been suggested that they can be sensitive the stuff like butane etc that will be present in an aerosol - just what I've read anyway.

Anyway, hope peeps notice an improvement as I did .

For anyone whos still not sure what we're talking about, here's the how to borrowed from tdiclub TDIClub Forums - View Single Post - Stumbling mystery solved. MAF!

I might spray the aerosol into another container such as the lid, and then apply the actual residue. :)

It's not going into the MAF proper - only the connector plug and that's sealed separate from the MAF.

Think you really need the gooey stuff for it to work mate...

Well it's done;)

Initially sceptical that it would make any difference.

I can confirm this actually works:thumbup:

First thing that's noticeable is the idle, Smoothed out and virtually no vibration. Sitting in traffic with the window open a quarter, Stereo on vol:10 honestly wouldn't think it's a diesel.

Secondly the throttle response has improved.:D

Reckon this cost about 60p and about 5mins, No complaints here:D:D

trip to maplins in the morrow me thinks

Item No. RE90X £4.00 for a 50g tube.

Think i used about 10grams worth at most.

What does this grease actually do??

why will grease make my car run better

someone please explain

• Lubricates, waterproofs, insulates and preserves electrical and electronic equipment

• High surface resistivity

• Ideal for switch contacts, ignition systems and EHT connections

basically makes a better connection between the MAF and the ECU?

This may be a silly question, I am a complete noob... as I keep saying... to the "under bonnet" stuff. Would this work on a Fabia 1.4MPi? Where is the MAF? Once again.... befuddled by the easy stuff...

Thanks people,

Duggie.

would this work on petrol turbo vehicles as well?
