Cage mod - wow!

Featured Replies

any hints on unclipping it????

There is a little tab underneath. Just squeeze and pull (oooh errrr).

I did this mod last night and can't say I have noticed any real difference but it can't do any harm.

Took me 5 whole minutes and I practically bled. Not as easy as it sounds. But it's the right way

I got my tube of gunge from Maplins on Friday. Gonna do mine tomorrow.

Couple of questions....

Why is this called the "Cage" mod.... I don't get it....?

And does the SDI engine have the same plug in approximately the same place...?

If so... Would this treatment benefit Mrs Grr's car too?

Thanks:thumbup:

It's called the cage mod after the guy who did it or made it widespread knowledge, his name or username on a US forum was cage.

Did mine today!

This is a well worth little mod (if it really is a mod?) Not the full tune up I had hoped for (think I'd built it up a bit to much in my head after reading sooooooooooo much on ta'net)..

However, got a notable improvement in the way it behaves at lower revs (1000 - 1750ish) much smoother and more willing, I pootle around in 4th @ 30 when I can... Found my self almost changing up to 5th due to the smoothness making me think I was in 3rd still! (sub- conscious is a funny old thing) :D So it's got my seal of approval!

I wonder if this is where the perceived improvement is in the rev range (or maybe it's more road speed related) because lower volumes of air create lower strength signals so this tweak helps the ECU to work with them by making them clearer / cleaner?? I'm completely guessing!

As for the tricky connector? Once you've figured it out it's easy.. It's a Pinch & pull affair.. Won't need lots of force so if your Yanking on it your doing it wrong! It's a similer design to the connections on the central locking actuators.. which I broke, so be careful!

And One last thing.. I read somewhere like I'm sure you all have (maybe even further up on this thread?) One guy points out that the upper VAG models get GOLD connections so VAG have an inclining this connection is sensitive... MINE WERE GOLD?!?!?! Is this the norm on the vRS?

:confused:I would have thought that the silicon would insulate the contacts ! that then would give the ECU an error reading and it would then default to a basic setting. Has anybody done this and then had a look to see if any faults were then stored ? I wouldn't have thought there would be any damp around the connector in the first place,or you could always try some shrinkwrap around the plug if there was any damp around to try it first. cheers - Stuart.

That's a fair point, but no one had ever reported a degrading of performance, wouldn't default MAF settings be the same as no MAF, some people have disconnected their MAF when they've gone faulty, would be good if one of these guys commented on hoe they run with a disconnected MAF?

This mod isn't to avoid dampness, it's to reduce cross talk across the connections.

My Maplins sourced stuff came yesterday and I tried it on my Vrs. My misses has been driving it today and says that it sounds noisier than before!!!

Bugger!!!! (I will drive it tonight and see if she's being paranoid)

There was nothing wrong with it before to be honest just wanted to see if it made any difference.

If it's not broken don't fix it.

I used it on her '97 Mazda 323 though and its WAY better now than it was before!!!

Did you tell her you were changing something? Just wondering if it's all in the mind :)

Steve

ordered some Dow Corning DC4 from Farnell to try this out, they sent it by UPS courier, in a box! lol

only paid £4 for it :)

just put some on now, that connector is really fiddly to get off but not once you know how, not drove it yet will see if it feels any different on the way to the gym, my connectors were gold

Nice bit of efficient packaging

Still, suppose someone has to keep UPS in business...

Steve

only been the gym and back but cant really notice any difference, the connectors on my MAF and loom were both very very clean though anyway, no corrosion etc

my local maplins only stocks the Aerosol can version. Bought this, but it's not use really. what sprays out is pretty much like WD40.

I was thinking, would it be just the same to use Vaseline? Cause some people use Vaseline on Car battery contacts for much the same principle (to keep the contacts dry)

I've been using Vaseline on MAF connectors for ages! I think this VRS is probably the 4th or 5th i've done it to. Seems to sort out the connections fine!
