Which panel filter to vRS?

Featured Replies

Hello guys!

I'm about to get a new air filter for my vRS. But I'd liked some recommendations which filter I should buy. K&N? Green? Pipercross? BMC? I remember to read that some filter had some fitting issues and some had broken MAFs... So any advise is very welcome! :)

Thanks guys!

Hi

I have used the Pipercross one in mine for approx 50k miles

It has worked really well :)

I am pleased with mine

Got better fuel economy too

4mpg :D

£28.00 + VAT we sell them for

Sarah

ive got a green cotton panel filter

£35 delivered!

there all the same really

Pipercross

K+N

Green

Just make sure you get a PD160 intake to make the most of it (just noticed you have one)

I say Green

I used a pipercross in mine too, worked well :)

I had a Jetex filter, Seems to have held up better than the green filter and fitted spot on, the green ones were a bit on the small side and have been known to slip into the airbox.

I wouldnt bother with BMC or an induction kit route, been down that road and ripped it off again, waste of money!

What's wrong with a paper element filter obtainable from Halfords/GSF etc?

Is there no kudos?

That's what I'm doing - new paper filter every 10k miles (and I'm not the only one! ;) :P ) AFAIK, there's not difference in throughput for a fresh paper filter as there is with a panel filter (cotton or foam) There are arguments that a panel filter is re-useable and thus costs less in the long run, but then having seen the state filters get into in not terribly much time, the last thing I want to have to do is clean a manky one. I suppose I could do it every week or maybe every month before it gets too dirty, but that's FAR too much like hard work! :D

After living with a K & N fpr about a year - I wouldn't go that route again.

The fit is less than perfect, making for a poor seal unless you fiddle with it for hours.

Think I'll get a green filter, as I've heard good things about them...

My experience is the opposite, Bas. K&N's seem much better made and are actually designed for the size of air box they go into. Greens are not as good a fit (I tried a couple of different ones!) :(

Sorry but this arguement dosent stand up the only reason car manufactorers dont use cotton washable filters is come service time they would lose a fortune globally,a good cotton filter green/k+n or whatever flows a greater amount of cfm's therefore the engine see's more air for any given rev range,f1 cars for example use bmc and k+n they wouldnt if there was no benifit in doing so also the filteration of a k+n at least is 10 times (smaller) better than a paper filter even when new. Ok rant over;)

my 2p worth have had both pipercross and K&N out of the two i would take K&N.

Pipercross fine, fits OK and no problems. I clean every 5K. Doesn't take long (no oiling & draining). Well worth the effort. Have considered putting spring clip on filter box top as bolts must wear in time, but not needed yet. Cost effectiveness depends on mileage, but at 25-30K a year I worked out that it was the sensible way to go.

I've run with a K&N for over two years without issue. The fit on mine is perfect.

sometimes a k and n arrives a little too well oiled and desrtroys the maf sensor, pipercross all the way for me,no expierience of the green one so can't comment:thumbup:

Does it?!

Chris

yes

I popped a K & N filter in last week and must say it breaths better. As for the excess oil I could not see any on the plastic bag wrapping the filter came in and the filter did not seem oily

Maybe someone got one on POETS day.

I've always assumed it to be a sensible precaution to 'mop up' any excess oil with a kitchen tissue before fitting a new or re-oiled filter.

And while I'm not recommending anyone else do so, I always give my MAF element a quick clean with isopropyl alcohol a few miles after cleaning my K&N. I personally have never had any issues with this proceedure, but as I say, I'm not recommending anyone else try it.

What about DNX any good ??

hmm - wonder why I have a k&N that drops into the airbox then..Mustve been a Monday morning production run...

must admit i can't tell any difference with the new filter on to the oe one,but we will see on the next rolling road day

yes

Then how come K&N haven't gone out of business?!

Chris

just posting my personal and expensive expierience of their product,it may be the only time in the history of filters it has happened, but it did.

and after a little search i'm not the only one who has had problems

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia/k-n-filters/14748/

Seems to say that K&N have never had any claims and the problem is when someone who doesn't know what they're doing cleans and re-oils excessively. This is also true of any panel filter which requires oiling
