90mph police chief's driving ban

BBC NEWS | Wales | 90mph police chief's driving ban

The former chair of roads policing at the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) has been banned from driving for speeding at 90mph.

Meredydd Hughes, the chief constable of South Yorkshire, apologised after being caught speeding on camera on the A5 at Chirk near Wrexham in May.

He stood down from his role at Acpo after he was summonsed for the offence, which happened when he was on holiday. He was disqualified for 42 days and fined £350 by Wrexham magistrates.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Gotta hurt - especially as he was campaigning for more discretely positioned speed cameras!

Chris

That'll teach him.

more discretely positioned speed cameras...

I agree they're silly all in a clump like that :P

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

sorry i found it so funny i nearly pmsl, couldnt happen to a nicer guy

Whats the speed limit on that section of the A5? A ban seems a bit much if its a 70.

Still, I do like laughing at others misfortune ;):D

it says 60 in the report.

50%/30mph over the limit? Deserves to get the book thrown at him.

:o Sorry didn't read it properly

IIRC 30mph over the speed limit is 'guaranteed' ban, no matter the speed limit.

It's not guaranteed - a friend got a fixed penalty for 95 in a 60.

If it does go to court then a the start point for the sentence is a ban , but various factors can mean a large fine and points

Well done for picking that up so discreetly

i reckon he tried to challenge it with his position and it failed and was taken all the way ;)

Chris

It would be easier to be sympathetic to him if he'd be campaigning to increase speed limits or make scameras more visible. ;)

How I laughed when I heard.

All the times he's been quick to get on the news ref speeding enforcement and celebrating speed camera's. He also always claims that his force has a zero tollerence - although like many forces colleagues are exempt.

Serves him right.

On one hand there is the view that he preaches the rules -so he should abide by them ,not have one law for them and £60 + 3 points for us for minor instantaneous transgressions, and perhaps some magistrates are seeing the police respect falling by the wayside.

Then again (and please don't flame me without thinking long and hard about the next bit ) what was his level of training - if he held no advanced training skills ,then the system could be held to be true.

If on the other hand he was held advanced training (like the 159 bloke) he had assessed the situation to be safe and it was only his excess that was wrong - it rather sends ( or re inforces) the message that it not about road safety (thats not in doubt as since cameras road safety has been going downhill) but about how much cash the camera mob can accumulate to spend on a multitude of things ( and to verify that point have a look at some of their accounts)

I haven't read about him getting any points.

When you get a ban , you don't get points

Yes he is a former top traffic cop (at least according to the spiel!). I have no idea where he was caught and if what he was doing was actually safe.....

Chris

Indeed, and when you get your license back, it will be clean of any points you had before!!

Are you sure?

If you get a ban for reaching 12 points it's cleared , but I thought if you had a straightforward ban for a new single offence any existing points are unaffected?

They would certainly still be relevant for insurance purposes as you've had them in the period they ask about.

And if you had a high level of training and you were caught by this guy what do ya reakon he'd say? ......The limit is the limit I'd say. :)

Not that agree with the system ;)

Yeah, it's very common in the taxi industry, always opt for a short ban, go on holiday, come back to a clean license.

As for insurance, not sure if anyone declares to be honest, if they've got a clean licence, thats what they tell them.

And its one law for them & one for us. Its an offence not to know whos driving your car. Yorkshire Police have committed the same offence at least 26 times & avoided prosecution, note these were not 999 calls

That's definitely wrong.

You are asked if you've had any convictions in the past five years - they may have been removed for totting up purposes , but you have had them and if you lie that's invalidated your insurance

Agreed

With Insurance companies & the Police sharing info these days you will be found out if you dont declare so your a mug if you think you can get away with it.

There was a prog recently on the BBC when a police officer checked with an Insurance co from the roadside what the person had put on their decleration & they were found to have lied, thats also an offence

When you make any claim Insurance companies these days check for non decleration etc before paying out & will certainly ask to see your licence so if you have points declare them, I think Im correct in saying bans are also noted on your licence

OUt of interest do the police check with the insurance companies or with the DVLA database ,because if it is the DVLA i am in trouble as it is consistently wrong, insisting that I dont have insurance when i do .The DVLA say it is because i have just re insured (insurance april tax november) .This has now happened with 3 insurance companies .
