Fabia Tailgate Strut Problem

Featured Replies

Hello to all from Wiltshire, a mostly happy 53 plate Fabia TDI Estate owner. :)

I have been browsing for a while and finaly plucked up the courage to post!

I hope someone can help. The tailgate struts on my Fabia estate open the tailgate a little too well, so well that the tailgate bangs when it reaches the full extent of the struts. I'm a bit concerned that this is going to break them and it sounds awful as well.

Do they need replacing?

I have seen posts about the opposte problem but not this.

Thanks for your help

Rich

They were a problem, I had them replaced under wty on both my vRS Fabia. They leak the oil out of the seals around the shaft.

Are they "too" powerful when this happens? I'm actually looking for a broken fabia tailgate strut - but one that's broken to the point where it's lost perhaps 75% of it's strength.

If you need two new fabia tailgate struts, Rich - drop me a PM - I have a few I got cheap. ;)

I had this exact same problem - the struts had leaked a little and lost their stiffness - hence, the struts extended a little too highly and the tailgate went up too well - made a clonk when extended. The tailgate also closed too easily. I wacked a couple of new struts on and the problem was solved.

Jason - you say you have some cheap... ;-) Are these form an estate and are they easy to change? Ours is starting to get a bit weak so was thinking of swapping them.

Are they the same strut? I'm not 100%, but willing to do you two at what I paid for them, if you'll post me one of the knackered ones back you have?

Cheers Pete

You confirmed what I thought. Didn't want to replace them unnecessarily.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

devonutopia, thanks for the offer, I'll check with the stealers and see if they are the same part for the Hatch/Estate.

No probs

Same P/N for fastback and combi (hatchback and estate).

Checked the part with Winchester Skoda and apparently the hatch and estate take different parts. The parts guy made a point of confrming whether for hatch or estate. Perhaps there is a revised part number, I'll post it up when I get them.

Having some warranty work done there and said they will fit them for free. No big deal I guess but saves me doing it. £12.65 +vat each iirc

All good.

Thanks for the info and warning guys - at £12 I'll get them from the dealer rather than you Jason but thanks for the offer anyhow! I'll also mae sure I have some timber jammed in there when I come to do them!

I've just saved a kittens life finding this.

The recent weather seems to have knackered the tailgate struts on my Fabia vRS.

They were working fine until the severe frosts and ice arrived, but now the tailgate has got a mind of its own it seems. Great caution is currently being excercised until I get them replaced.

Anyone else's struts suffered the same fate?

watch out if you take the top two screw fixing bracket from the tailgate.

They only work correctly when the bracket which can be fitted in two

positions is fitted the correct way!

Do not remove the brackets Just replace the gas struts, move silver pin to left, pull off the ball head top and bottom Replace gas strut with new strut

Yes - and just found this thread - and just found that if the price quoted is correct there's no point in spending either £45 (new aftermarket) or even £25 (scrapper) for a pair at Ebay...

Abstracting the part code from the diagram so that search will pick it up

old thread but helpd when I had this problem.

£21.50 off the bay and Magneti Marelli italian brand. Free postage from Latvia and very quick. You needs a screwdriver to pop off the original clips, the new ones just clip on. Would also be advised to get someone to help you hold the boot up as it easier done this way.

Hehe; well either you got lucky, or I got unlucky. I bought a pair from same source on 19th Feb. Still waiting. :wonder:

need a pair of these myself.. are they very expencive from a dealer??

not sure of current dealers prices but the skoda dealers who sell on ebay are doing them at £21 for one.
