BMC or PD160??

Featured Replies

Is the BMC induction kit worth buying or is it more worthwhile to do the PD160 trick and fit a panel filter??

I have heard (from other forums) that induction kits aren't that good for diesels, but the k&n never affected my Golf.

Just wondering if it's worth forking out £150 for an induction kit....

I've just got the BMC and it's very nice. Nice big fat air intake which even humbles the PD160. Nice intake noise and a nice lift off "wooooo" too. :D

150 quid for the bmc, where do i sign?i've never seen it at that money

Guess it depends what plans you have for the car. If you're chasing big bhp, you'd be better off getting the BMC from the outset. If you're not too bothered, then just replace the paper filter every 10k or get a panel filter.

Give Formula1 a shout. Think I paid a little over £150, but it was the best price I've found and kit IS for the fabia. Mind you, the way mine is fitted is because my battery is in the boot. Not sure how the BMC fits with the battery in the usual spot.

It would appear on closer inspection that my dyslexia kicked in and skipped out the line at the bottom which says that price is if bought with a re-map.

Sorry!!

Oh well kill to birds with one stone...............

Well, I have a local-ish company lined up to do the re-map, but he can only offer PD160 intake.

I might get the BMC and exhaust and then get a re-map sorted.

Formula1 are offering the BMC at £168 ish, but are currently out of stock.

BMC's not worth the cash IMHO, i know of 3 of them that have been taken off due to 'negative carachteristics'

Reduction of top end grunt, width of power band and proven RR power reduction after putting it on.

Is that combined with other mods or just by itself??

I'm just thinking that surely better airflow combined with exhaust system and remap would be ok.

Or is the pd160 mod enough??

That was combined with Exhaust/manifold/turbo/remap and in the case of one of the cars Injectors.

Its up to you if you want to spend the money but If i was to do it all over again I'd just run a good free flowing filter and 160 pipe.

I think I'll go for the PD160 then, to play it safe.

I can also change at a later date (when I have some money).

Unless you are saying a BMC airfilter is more restrictive then a pannel filter how can a large air induction kit which comes with an inlet pipe twice the size of the PD160 pipe like a BMC that can flow more then enough air then is required make a turbo car loose power ?

Very happy with my BMC - Car seems to keep pulling and pulling, but that could be placebo of the lighter flywheel and other mods. :)

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!

More opinions please!!!

Are you an engine bay tart? BMC box is sexy to look at, even if you're not 100% sure of the performance gains. For me, I've just seen a drop in smoke and a "feel" of more power. I also got it because my stock box had knackered fixings, but I also went for the appearance (yes, I'm an engine bay tart :o)

I dont know really, but thats why I said IMHO, possibly the reynolds number of the air passing through?

3 Matching opinions and a set of RR graphs cant all be wrong can they?

It does look loverly, but how would it go around a standard battery??

I've got the BMC CDA and here are my views on it.

Its a bu**er to fit due to the lack of space. when fitting wear gloves as carbon fibre splinters are not funny :o

Once fitted the sudden urge has gone the big lump of power doesn't seem to me there anymore, but what it does do is rev harder and pulls better at the top of the rev range. Cant say it smokes any less than with the Green Cotton and Cupra intake. Been on for nearly 9k and so far no problems.

Would I buy it again? Hmmm I'm really not sure TBH yeah it sounds better and it revs more but I liked the old big lump of power from the green cotton and cupra intake.

not really in to them to be honest.

lost 3bhp and 4 little torques when my car was 220 bhp and 310lbft

Mine was about twice the size of mongrel boys though. mybe too big.

I'd say it's more to do with maxing-out the MAF reading, which may well then reduce the boost on the turbo to protect it. If that's the case, it'd only be worth getting if you were going to have a custom remap (and maybe uprated turbo) AFTER having it fitted.

Oh, and I'm another proponent of clean paper filters rather than anything more fancy. I do have a PD160, although it's more to stop my car turning into a sooty Red Arrow when I put my foot down than any performance reasons...

I went for the one that F1 recommended to be honest. I wondered if they'd done some testing.... It did seem as if they had a size that came suitable to all PD130 applications.
