Worst Christmas present ever.

Driving home on Christmas day, very gentle bend taken at a perfectly reasonable speed and next thing I know the back end steps out. I counter steer, with no success. Then I am spinning into a wrought iron fence at which point I remember hitting my head on the drivers door and window.

In the few seconds it took to regain my bearings it would appear I was either up on two wheels or possibly rolled it into a tree at which point the car spun again finally coming to rest up against the front door of a farm house.

Ah well, the good news is I walked away with nothing more than a bump on the side of my head and some bruising where the seat belt did it's thing.

Car has been written off (no surprise really) so it's bye bye my cherished little motor. I will be getting another Skoda though, without doubt as I believe it was this tough little baby that saved me from serious injury. You'll note that in one of the pics the drivers seat is further back and lower than the passengers. It wasn't before the crash ! I have started a diet out of the shame that my 'robust' frame killed the seat lol.

So, hankies at the ready everyone, here comes the pics. . .

 glad you are ok , the car has took quite a hit or two

Good to hear you got out without any real injury.

Yes, the Fabia is a tough little car and that was the main reason I bought my first one, I had a Fiat previously, and after passing an accident on the way to work one night with a dead occupant, decided to change ASAP.

The main thing mate is that your ok, the car can be replaced but human life cannot.

Davy

At least you where ok sorry about your loss

Gutted for you mate, but glad you're OK.

I know how you feel.

Shame about the car, you have my sympathies, glad you walked away.

Any idea yet why the back end broke away, ice, oil, water, tyres?

glad your ok but maybe the speed wasn't so reasonable if that much damage was done

Ah well that's the bit that has me confused. I had only just put 4 new tyres on it a month before so grip was as good as you could expect it to be. Speed really wasn't an issue, couldn't see any ice / frost etc anywhere on the road hedges or trees and things. The road was damp and the weather cold so I guess it could have been some ice. I have since been back to where it happened, which was a very scary drive I have to say, and I noticed that where I think I lost control there are two man hole covers on the bend right in the middle of the road. I guess if the back wheel got on one of those it might have caused it.

It all happened so quickly though I doubt I will ever really know for sure.

Shhhh put that down to a week floorpan - did well to walk from that one fella.

Well I was doing 45-50 mph at the time of the spin, obviously it was too fast given what happened but I have driven the road numerous times before at greater speeds and been completely ok.

Maybe it was just a combination of things, who knows. . . .

another advert for ESP if ever I saw one...

Glad you're ok, this is always horrible, but as others have said, cars can easily be replaced, people can't, just enjoy choosing the next one :)

"very gentle bend taken at a perfectly reasonable speed and next thing I know the back end steps out"

Im no expert, and certainly no driving saint/god, but ive never known the rear to step out unless there was a plausable reason - ie too fast for the road/conditions, diesel/other slippery contaminent, tyre failure etc.

Gutted for you none the less.

What a shame, but the main thing is that you are ok

Did you have a rear ARB fitted?

Oh f*ck!

Glad you're ok!

Did you have a rear ARB fitted?

I did if it was done at the factory yes lol. It was completely standard, i'd not done any mods to it apart from an air fresher and my parking permit.

Gutted for you mate :(

Whoa! Some sobering photos - glad you are ok and hope you find a worthy replacement.

Crash Buddies :) :(

glad ur ok m8...

you normally remember more details a couple of months l8r...

 Glad you are ok!

Oh dear - sympathies.

But, as others have said, you walked away after. And in pretty good condition too

Sounds like ice to me.

Remember years ago, cold conditions, it rained very briefly and then immediately froze. So, the surface looked like 'road' but was mostly ice.

It was lethal - and you couldn't tell until you hit it.

as im always told , you can replace a car its just a lump of metal, but you can never replace yourself.

That looks very nasty :(

But like the others have said you are still here to tell the tale :)
