Clever Ideas

Featured Replies

Was watching Top Gear on Dave today, the Noble M15 review and they said that the rev counter needle is illuminated in blue until you reach top revs, then the colour of the needle changes to red. Nice.

I wonder if you have had a bright idea that you would like to see on your next car? Or an idea that you've seen incorporated into another car that should be made more widelyy available. It doesn't have to be ultra techy or extravagent, just a good idea?

I can't tell you as someone may steal my idea and I won't make any money

I saw that, is cool, fear it would encourage high revving all the time... always thought

the saab's gear lever locking (into reverse i think??) as security feature was good.

The one feature I would like to see more on cars is the 'night panel' mode where almost all buttons/dials/kn0bs are blacked out apart from speedo, rev counter and fuel/temp gauges + a button to turn it all back on again :D

If the speedo needle changed colour to indicate when you are speeding that would be a good idea.

heated front screens

i hate scraping ice off the screen , only for it freeze back over by the time i've got 100 yards down the road from the house

Good calls!

I like the red interior "night vision" lights that some cars have for night driving. Far less intrusive than the bright white normal map reading lights and they also have the added benefit of making you feel a bit SAS.

I fitted mine specifically for the SAS/Cockpit effect  Get the car going fast enough and it's almost as loud as a C-130 :P

But it's a damn good idea though.

I'd like to see top up cards for petrol stations as well, similar to mobile phone cards, where you can top up over the phone, then just put your card into the petrol pump and fill up as required, or the pump stops when your credit runs out...

but does any Skoda , or for that matter any VAG products have them ?

Ford owns the patent on this idea so any other car isn't gonna have heated front screens just yet.

BMC used them on the works Minis in the 1960s

Er isn't it an option on the Passat? if so then surely various Big VWs and Audis have it also.

Don't forget Land Rover, Aston and Jaguar ;) Our 1993 Range Rover Vogue SE had one too.

Carolyns superb has the SAS lights.

Tempted to try and fit them to the vrs.

Cheers

It's a fairly easy mod to do. The only slightly tricky part is getting a 'lights on' signal to it at night.

I read somewhere recently that the patent for the heated screens is due to run out in a couple of years and Ford won't be able to renew it. Having had a Granada with a heated screen I definitely recommend them.

My suggestion is to have a facility to change the dashboard illumination colours depending on your mood. You have a button on the dash and each time you press it the colours cycle through until you've got the colour you want.

I'm sure I could do something similar on my Citroen C2 GT... There were different settings and I played with them a couple of times. I remember dimming the speedo and only having some of the info on display. Could have been my failing eyesight though.

You can buy dials with colour changing needles depending on revs etc.

I saw some at autosport than went from green to yellow to red. very slick!!

I think the latest Mustang has this on board, or was it the GT? I remember seeing it on Top Gear though.

I like the black-out idea; the Elegance interior is presently like the Blackpool flippin' Illuminations in the dark!

The "speed limit light" was a common feature (set at 30mph) in 1930s MGs.

Never been over-convinced by heated windscreens; any time one would have done me any good, I'd have needed heated side windows too.

Shouldn't really be that difficult with LEDs.

I'd like the engine to step down to 50bhp every time SWMBO borrows it.

Heated front screen like everyone else (had it on a Focus).

Heads up display for mph, rpm, sat nav.

Not the most exciting idea, but I think the carrier bag handles in the Octy boot are a touch of genius - simple but very useful.

IIRC someone mentioned that Skoda have licensed the design to Mercedes.

Now that we have light sensing headlights, and rain sensing wipers, I wonder if some manufacturer will come up with a system that switches off rear fog lights when its not foggy.

How would it no what the peed limit was!

by gps :)

teh heated screens are very very useful indeed. my brother has one on his focus and it gets used more often than you think, or at least it does when i drive it :D
