windscreen wipers juddering

Featured Replies

When it's raining my current wipers swing to the right nice and smoothley but when going back to the bottom of the windscreen they jump and always miss a chunck of rain water.

It's driving me up the wall not being able to see clearly

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've changed new bosch blades and new aero blades and get the same results with each.

Pic attached to show what I mean.

Try using some glass "cutting" compound, most window manufactures use it...

Worked a treat on mine

or clay your windscreen

I know this may sound daft, does a glass cutting compound clean the cr4p off the glass?

yes - since it'll be a very fine cutting polish.

I would personally try the clay first as it'll be less abrasive

wonder if I should just get the windscreen replaced. It's had too many repairs to mention on the left side of the screen, strange though, no chips on the drivers side though or any damage reported.

Juddering can be caused by a bent or twisted wiper arm , it maybe my eyesight but your wiper arm looks a little mis-shapen to me.

Looking at the picture it looks like you have Aero style blades but have not attached the spoiler to the wiper arm, this could cause the blade to lift of the screen.

ive been told that defective wiper springs can cause juddering problems, but would try windscreen clay first as mentioned.

Thanks,

I've taken a look and the metal arm looks to be straight.

Yes I am using the Aero wipers but they didnt come with a spoiler for the wiper arm, the same also happens when I had my Bosch set of blades.

I've got the screen clean and polish autoglym products, they do appear to have made it better but it's still not ideal. Will have a look to find out more about this clay before I look at going down the purchasing of new wiper arms.

Thanks everyone

Quick update. Although the new wiper arm worked to start with the problem is back again. It is worse at 70mph than 60mph but does it as low as 30mph

I've tried

Clay bar'ng the windscreen

New wiper blades

New wiper arm

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I think you'll find this problem occurs as the blade settles in and becomes 'bent' over time in one direction (try lifting it off the screena dn looking at it end on). When this happens the balde doesn't 'flop over' at the end of the up stroke before it returns to the park position - meaning it judders and jumps across the screen. Try gently bending either he arm or twisting the blade itself (they have metal rods in them) to compensate slightly such that the balde in its bent position sits more squarl to the screen. THis usually works.

if u lift the wiper arms off the windscreen and operate the wipers, does it still judder on the down stroke?

it could, as mbames suggests be a problem with the mechanism. I would remove both arms, then the scuttle panel from the bottom of the screen to get access to the mechanism. Lubricate all the linkages and bushes, reassemble and test it again.

what i have done in the past which has worked is:

clean the screen with meths to remove all the residue on the screen and then put new wipers on

it may also be that the genuine vw/skoda wipers on the passinger side has a slight curve which may causing the problem?

Mine certainly used to judder, and I think it was more in one direction than the other, and then one day in the pouring rain they seized up. I had to get low-loader back home. Took the linkage out and cleaned it all up.

Cheers,

I'll see if I can get some time before work tomorrow to have a look.

Remember to mark the assemble before taking it all apart... you will need some circlip pliers (or similar) to take it apart.

I just cleaned mine up and packed it back out with grease and reassembled. No problems two years on.

Might need some pullers to get the wiper arms off (but if you have changed them recently you should be ok)... just read up on getting the scuttle pannel off :-)

I've finally got round to testing this. with the wipers lifted off the screen and gently pressure on the arms to feel for juddering I can report there was No juddering what so ever. Is it still worth removing the scuttle panel if I can feel No juddering?

Thanks

i still think new set of wipers and a really good clean of the screen with a window cleaning compound has got to be worth doing before you dismantle the wipers.

you may find that it works and saves the challenge of punting the wipers back together

Matt...get my Bosch blades form Andrew Pages off Jacobs Well Lane...swear by them..(both Page's and Bosch blades):thumbup:

I changed both arms for VW Aero arms a couple of weeks ago and now have bosch aero blades. I've also cleaned the winscreen with a clay bar to get it even cleaner and I have also applied glass polish but it still happens. :(

A litre of oil on the screen should cure it :rofl: !!!!
