Climatronic OFF button mod, why?

Featured Replies

Ive seen on Stu's Site the Off button mod for the octavia, can i just ask what benefit it has? it says on his site it turns off the fan and climatronic, well i can already do this my turning the center fan switch left until it turns off.

because you can

lol, fair enough. i had thought maybe what it really was for was to just shut off the AC and let normal air come in

For some reason it was never enabled on the Octy but there is an On/Off switch on the Golf Mk 5.

Its a quick way of killing some of the background noise - if you get a phone call for example.

But I appreciate its not much more difficult to turn the fan speed down.

As mentioned above - I think the main reason is because we can.

And because VW deliberately went to the effort of adding that extra bit of plastic to the switch to try to stop us having this feature!

It's also quite neatly placed to extend your digit across from the gear lever and press it.

gear lever .... how quaint :)

It's one of those because we can things for sure, why VW went to the trouble of "disabling" it for us poor skoda owners is beyond me

unlike using the fan speed kn0b to switch off the climate, when you use the button to switch off/on the previous setting are restored without having to adjust anything.

good point well made

what he said. i use it all the time when receiving calls over the BT and its a lot handyer than using the dial

I always found that rotating the speed dial was not always effective and needing to be cotunual rotated left and right to click it to the off position.

Now just press the "stealth" off button !

You need to rotate the fan speed dial all the way anti clockwise until just one green LED is lit, then stop and turn it one more click anticlockwise to completely shut it down.

THAT'S why the OFF button mod is worth doing :D

Unfortunately no. Our Passat goes back to the first setting when reactivated.:thumbdwn:

Anyone got the button underneath to do anything.??

Assume this is just an Octavia II thing?

It's the hidden button on the upper half face of the central climatronic dial that does the fan speed. On more 'superior' VAG cars it is clearly designated as an 'OFF' button along with a 'DUAL' button underneath it. The Skoda 2Zone unit doesn't have either button just blanks but snipping off a tiny plastic tab re enables the 'OFF' facility.

The thing is that because it doesn't have an On/Off label on it I always forget to use it!

Will snipping the plastic off effect the warranty?

Good thinking. Better inform my insurer (especially given how inflexible they appear to be)

It could be classed as a performance upgrade but i'm not 100% on that.

Sacasm aside, I very much doubt it will affect anything whatsoever. I even snipped the tab off the bottom button just in case my MY08 had the secret dual feature.

Result? bugger all and SWMBO now thinks I'm a bigger idiot than usual

I am thinking that too, the switching off of climate will result in a minute increase in performance :):)

Ditto, my lower button does nowt either.

Could some one take a VAGCOM reading of a Passat/Golf Climatronic module and see if it could be recoded to make it work?

Told SWMBO that the lower button puts the car in sport mode!!

Told mine that it put car into 'Turbo Nutter' mode, so was told to change it back :o:P

Yes Nick, the clues are in the forum it's been posted in! ;)

How about a seat ventilation button for when certain 'conditions' arise.

If the front passenger then presses the button, you know they are guilty!

It's really convenient - they should come like this off the factory, no reason they shouldn't, apart perhaps from inter-group politics?

Mine was 'fixed' by the dealer before I picked it up. I was surpised when he mentioned that he'd done it - I never asked for it, although I was planning to do it. He said they 'fix' all cars before they're delivered, and owners are told about the 'undocumented' feature. Makes sense to me.
