Power Steering pump =

Featured Replies

Just had the garage phone me today to say that my power steering pump and the sensor are both knackered. Quoted me £700 to get them fixed  I've got no choice but to cough up the money as I need the car.

Is there any other faults apart from this one that are common on the Fabia that I might loose sleep over the next few months.

Fabia 1.4 Classic (2000) 55,000 miles

Cheers.

I'd be tempted to get the sensor replaced first and see if that fixes it - how do they know the pump is gone if the sensor that actuates it is also gone? - From memory it's usually the sensor (ours was)

They fitted a new sensor first then diagnosed that it was the pump that was at fault. Apparently the garage i've taken it to has had a lot of Fabias in for the same problem.

PS..I've now got a new worry...Do you know how much it would be for a new catalitic convertor for the exhaust...My last cars went on me and that cost £400+ a few years back..It was a Volvo. Hopefully this one will last for quite some time.

Cheers

2nd opinion... Had a lot in with the same problem sounds to convenient. Easy money for them by the sound of it.

I had the same problem. Even 2nd hand a pump from a low mileage accident damaged car that was in a scrapyard cost me £175. IIRC they are around £500 new. If you're paying that much make sure it's a new one! ;)

If the power steering is still working, I would say it's not the pump.

The power steering system in general does seem to be particularly weak on these cars, the steering rack can start leaking power steering fluid meaning the rack has to be replaced --> more £££s there.

Just to let you know that my wallet has now sprouted legs, packed a suitcase and ran out the door. I think it heard me mention the cost of repairing the bloody thing!

Makes you wonder how Skoda managed to get such a high recommendation from JD. One of the most unreliable cars I've ever owned. Steering, Suspension, ARB's all seem to be sub-standard.

Easy - JDP effectively only covers the warranty period !

So faults happening now on a 8 year old car don't figure at all

Typical...

Madgolfer, sorry to hear of your problems, but while your wallet is not around, use BoilingPoint's quote above as a true source of what else can happen - or use the search function in this forum and the "ask a tech" forum - the three key words are in his quote! Of course some of the above work may have been done already (hopefully).

If you had more time - ie could do without your car for longer, there is an ECU re-manufacturer that fixes these items, gives a good warranty and allows you some time to return the old unit as trade-in. To go down this route you would need to use a VAG indep specialist.

For an eight year old car if that's all I'd class that as pretty good! Based on personal experience other makes have been far worse with more fundamental and major problems.

My car has had the power steering rack done , cost £680 to do it. Ive also had the suspension bushes done , and the Rad fan switch. So...that means I have the sensor and pump to look forward to in the future!!!

Well I've had mine 2 years (almost) and had all those faults and more.... What struck me as unbelievable is that when I got the car it only had 18,500 miles (verified) and yet all those problems cropped up within the first couple of months, luckily for me as they were all fixed under warranty. Since then The bushes have gone again and the steering is playing up. I'm told it's the ARB that needs replacing this time as the sleeves have come off (where the bushes sit). The steering is a bit of a minefield and using my technique (which I've explained at length in other threads), I can get around the steering issue. Even so how can such a low millage car have so many issues. And from what I read it's typical of the brand, especially the early models.
