Road Tax alternatives

Featured Replies

Looking at the new road tax banding, it looks to be fairly convoluted and imho designed by a practising lunatic.

What about alternatives?

I would scrap road tax (just like they have just done in Guernsey) and add a small amount to the price of fuel.

This way, less efficient cars pay more "tax", foreigners pay tax, tax dodging ****'s pay tax etc etc.

If the increase in fuel duty was calculated sensibly then people using more fuel ultimately pay more.

I do around 25k ish per year so I could potentially be worse off on such a scheme, surely doing something like this is much easier to implement than silly road pricing schemes that need little black box's to monitor movements, or daft banding for vehicle road tax.

Buy a tractor !

No road tax, red diesel 50p/l , no MOT, low insurance

Ok no go on M ways but speed on them is joke so chugging along at 40km/hr on ordinary roads not an problem.

Road rage not an issue - you just crush em!!

And while they are at it, they should add another penny per litre (or whatever the realistic figure is) to give every car on the road a minimum of third party insurance.

Normal insurance premiums should be reduced accordingly, and at least it means you don't have to worry about being hit by an uninsured driver, which seems to be an ever increasing danger these days on our roads.

It's far too sensible.

It stops people dodging the tax for a start , so overall costs to legal motorists should come down , and it is then a tax on vehicle use rather than ownership.

A range rover may be inefficient , but if it's rarely used then it doesn't generate much pollution , so it would encourage people to use their cars less frequently.

Combine these two and the jobs good.

IIRC basic insurance would be 1p per L and the tax would be 1.2p from some calculations I saw.

Take the fact that everyone already has insurance and suddenly insurance companies don't have you over that barrel and so would offer fire/theft and comprehensive as an extra since you can't double insure.

This might actually make the market more competitive as you don't legally "need" the insurance companies any more.

I agree with this method of taxation... people use their cars WAY too much...

Nipping down to the shops etc when it can be achieved in a 5 minute walk.

Don't know if any of you have watched any of the TV programmes called "The Woman Who Stops Traffic"?

Quite interesting really and also very annoying seeing some people attitudes to driving their cars on pointless journeys... Its my car, ive worked hard to get it and no-one is going to stop me!!!

Also think of the savings on equipment, policing and enforcement, the elimination of anpr.....

If the govt adopted something like this years ago they could have saved millions £'s

The flipside is people out of work in Swansea / DVLA as sthere are no more tax discs to issue.

Ok, Guernsey is a small island, but they did it a little while ago, just binned the road tax and increased fuel duty, and Gurernsey apparantly has more car's per sq ft of road than anywhere else in europe so the states win, and the motorist is paying as he / she goes

The usual reason for keeping tax disks is that they are a quick visual check of the vehicle's status , as you need(ed at the time) insurance and MOT to get a tax disk , but as ANPR becomes much more common they can be checked automatically , and insurance & MOT disks would be an easy option so police on foot can check them.

It wouldn't need much of a reduction in staff at the DVLA as they do a lot more than just VED

The only downside I can see of increasing the price of fuel is that it will then be seen as an even more desirable commodity and we'll see even more fuel thefts from vehicles :(

i watch that programme, there are plenty of people who live closer than our school than us ( we are half a mile away)and drive there, we walk in the rain, snow , whatever, i dont understand why people would even bother wasting the petrol to drive 800mtrs

Cos people are lazy these days.

I would be all for this sort of system.

Another method i had heard was being bandied around was including the Road Tax in with your car insurance. Now that police have the Power to crush your car for no Tax this could be a good way as it too would mean anyone who has Tax also has insurance and Vice Versa. It wouldnt stop every Twonk out there but then again no scheme ever will

We should scrap road tax, put the fuel up and have an annual mot sticker that could be used in the same way as a road tax badge which would show that you have showed your insurance when you had your mot done.

Nu Labour love technology and any opportunity to spy on your movements would be very welcomed. Also gives them a chance to waste your tax money as well.

Road tax alternatives have been discussed over the years, its a good idea in principle but somehow don't think it will happen.

i can't stand this woman who stops cars, who the hell does she think she is,no one and no amount of raising fuel duty will ever stop me from making journeys in the car where i could have walked,do gooding lefties, the enviromentaissue is b*llox.

But it does appear briskodians have come up with a far fairer way of taxing than this new banding system,.

Because they're lazy?

I hardly ever drive fir a journey of less than 2 miles. Walking or cycling is better for you and less bother. My pet hate is the school run mom journey: usually a mile or two, pumping out hydrocarbons and blocking the roads. It's fair enough for those that carry onwards to work, but plenty don't, and just use the car through idleness.

but don't you see, this is freedom of choice,i would drive a few hundred yards,i don't care,it is my choice, and i am taxed for it,they could put fuel up to 10 quid a litre and road tax over 1000 a year,it would not alter my lifestyle at all,all it would do would be to remove poor people from the roads, which in my opinion would be a good thing, nice clear roads for me.

You see its attitudes like mine you are dealing with,so on your bike;)

I drive my daughter to school when she stays over, but thats only cos i have to do a 10 mile trip to get her there. Its quiet funny when the school do their walk to school stuff and i turn up in the car. But quiet often we will park around the corner and walk the last bit.

Been thinking about the new road tax.

Big engined fantastic gas guzzlers are going to be worth nothing second hand.Might be a very tempting proposition.Cost of road tax outweighed by huge savings.

Hmmm Range Rover Vogue 4.6 petrol for the same price as a corsa 1.2.Maybe an E500 merc. Not sure yet for the next family vehicle:)

They should have done the petrol not the road tax as suggested.

Hey ho.I will do exactly the opposite to what this government wants to force me to do.

Walking or cycling is better for you and less bother.

Not to mention significantly slower and arriving at your destination (assuming you make it!) needing a shower

If people don't want to use their cars because they think it's "killing the planet", etc, then so be it, but I begrudge self-appointed pompous idiots who want to remove my freedom of choice because it does not fit in with their ideal of how I should live my life.

Chris

Can I just stop everyone for a second...

Carry on.

Anyway, Fuel duty is a dead end. What happens is someone comes up with a cheap electric vehicle that thousands of people use in cities? How do you tax their electricity for road use? Or if millions of people started cycling to work? How do you tax them?

Why do you think road charging is so popular at government level? If they wanted to, they could charge cyclists to use the road. It removes the burden on collecting tax from widening range of alternative energy sources and road charging gives the added bonus of tracking where you are at any particular time.
