Got OEM dampers +Eibachs? - a warning

Featured Replies

Have been running Eibach springs along with the OEM dampers for about 18 months now - covered about 18K miles with them.

In the process of fitting Koni FSD's atm (1 left to fit!) - but I noticed that the OEM dampers when removed had completely given up the ghost - the rears in particular could be compressed by hand all the way down, and would stay there!

Seems that I have been driving on the bumpstops for some time!

Read a bit about it - and it seems that OEM dampers used with shorter springs aren't a good idea - IIRC 7K miles is what that combo lasted someone on here..

All I would say is that unless you DIY the fitting (as I do), given the labour costs in the UK, this combo isn't a money-saving one in the longterm....

I'm remember that you did indeed Stu - just that I didn't realise just how important this issue really is - and it bears repeating this comment just in case someone is thinking of saving a few quid. It turns out to be more expensive long-term if you factor in labour.......

The OEM dampers I'm taking out are all completely lifeless - again, you're proved right me old mate....

Cheers

Interesting - we have Eibachs and OEM dampers on both our cars - so.... recommendations for non-OEM dampers please? :)

Koni FSD's without any doubt

you know I'm gonna say this: Koni FSD's. In the process of fitting them, but based on reviews, the fact that they are sold with the Eibach springs and that WW is passionate about them I think I chose wisely.

[EDIT] Oh and the fact that dear buddy Xav twisted my arm to get into an excellent GB from JKM - he got me started on all this modding insanity tbh...

Will know just how better they are than Eibach springs + "dead" OEM dampers in a couple of days....

Ran the Eibach dampers on mine and they worked very well and weren't too badly priced :D

Thanks chaps - Koni prices and I presume Jabba could supply?

Yes, they can - just looked at their site :)

Yes Jabba, awesome - I got mine from JKM - Kate there is super-efficient and a super-nice person.....:)

Bas i see this day in day out.

Customers are always buying just lowering springs. I try to tell them other wise but they just dont listen. Most of them come back at wither next mot time or if they are inteligent enough to inspect their cars once in a while they come back a few months later.

If a car has been happily flying round a set ride height for 4-5 years and you then lower the car forcing the damper rod further into the cylinder. The seals dont like the change in damper rod condition and usually give up the ghost.

Not only that if you go too low the damper will "bottom out" and the rod will damage the bottom of it.

If your fitting lowering springs its always recommended that you should fit shorter stroke dampers.

Ps the fsd's are amazing, ive been in wardys car and the ride is BETTER than oem :D

Your in for a real treat Bas ;)

tmrw am plan to put in the last one - just wondering if I cut the spring compressor length a bit, if I can turn it upside down (bolthead at the bottom) and put an airtool on it. Need to save my aching arms, lol.....

I did that

Just watch when you releasing them, as there will be less thread and the end might shoot off and take your face with it

When i say be careful i mean extreamley careful

Them coil springs pack a fair old punch

Erm....my Eibach springs have been on for over 40k now..... with OEM dampers. Handily I have some Eibach dampers to throw on now, and new top mounts.... I dread to imagine what state mine are in. Ill be sure to take pictures.

Cant wait to see what you make of the new set up Basil :)

Yours are likely to be shot ;)

But looking at it isn't likely to show anything Dave.

I seem to remember Eibach themselves recommending Koni dampers over their own for use with Eibach springs ;)

They didn't when I got mine!

Didn't when I phoned them a few months back. They did suggest their dampers were firmer than OEM but they never mentioned the K word.

Hello!

Am I missing something? I thought the springs would provide the force to extend the dampers as they lift the car back up? The dampers just provide the friction to slow the spring down... or are they pressurised then?

I am confused .

Im getting some eibachs fitted this week to my OEM shockers as i cannot afford the whole hog.

If shockers are needed IMO you might as well get coilovers

If shockers are needed IMO you might as well get coilovers

How does that one work then?

Well coilovers are adjustable unlike eibachs and Koni's, plus if i was spending as much on Koni's and Eibachs i'd rather have the look of Coilovers

< IMO >

Oh my, this is getting confusing!

A brief explanation with my limited knowledge, coilovers incorporate the spring and damper and depending on what you go for (or how big your wallet is) will depend on the quality of ride and adjustability, generally speaking these are used for cars that are going to be pushed hard such as on track days etc.

Eibach springs will lower the car but don't have any real bearing on the ride quality which is where the Koni FSD's come into there own, designed primarily for road use they 'stiffen' when pushed hard in the corners giving you all round benefits which is why they are so popular and so good. For what it's worth I believe Lamborghini fit them as standard to the Gallardo!
