Got OEM dampers +Eibachs? - a warning

Featured Replies

Well coilovers are adjustable unlike eibachs and Koni's, plus if i was spending as much on Koni's and Eibachs i'd rather have the look of Coilovers

< IMO >

fair point but not many people want to go that low and the comfort on coilovers is no-where near that of the traditional spring damper.

Coilovers are for people who want to go low, springs and dampers are for people who a little lower but dont really want to sacrifice comfort ;)

Well i went for the Eibachs as sort of a temporary measure just to get it sitting nice with the 17" alloys as it was too high for my liking, i know the OEM shockers arent going to last forever so in the mean time im saving up for coilovers.

Theres just so much i want that i have no idea what i want first

FMIC

Miltek

Leather Retrim

Coilovers

The list goes on and on :(

Keep the springs and add the FSD's later, it's an awesome combination :)

I really want it slammed though :(

Theres a lad on here with almost the identical vrs as mine on the octy wheels on its **** and it looks good, all depends what your after

i have Eibach springs fitted to my OEM shockers with no problems , and they have been abused , if the dampers were not working i would know about it , because the handling will be pretty poor , plus the vehicle only passed the MOT last month , without any advises on damper performance

Basil , the rear shockers (and i suspect the front shockers) will stay compressed when pushed down , as its an oil filled damper only , not oil and gas

an oil and gas damper will re-extend itself due to the pressure of the gas

as long as there is resistance when the shocker is being compressed , then it is working

i have no doubt that the use of the Eibach springs may shorten the OEM shockers life , but if Eibach were worried about it , i'm sure there would be some sort of disclaimer on the spring box

All I know is that the handling has dropped in performance over the last 6 months - loads of motorway wallowing- getting banging from both front corners over bumpy roads at low speed over the last week or two only.

Handling feels the worst it's ever been.

(btw- checked my ARB and it seems fine)

the shockers will become weaker over time due to them being asked to damp stiffer springs

Well, after reading this thread it's good to know I have a set of Koni FSDs to go with my Eibach springs I've just ordered!! :)

Oooh good thread

Until I changed mine a few weeks ago, my car had Eibach springs and some old adjustable Koni dampers. (Un)fortunately, one of the rear dampers failed - the gasket seal had gone and oil was leaking meaning there was no compression at all. :(

However, it was most convenient that the Koni FSD group buy was on :D

Having had the new FSDs fitted, I admit that the car is not as low as it was beforehand with the adjustable dampers (and I had them on "softest" setting minus half a turn or so).

So initially, I thought it was probably because they were new and needed some time to settle, however a few weeks later, they still seem to provide a slightly "less low" ride height.

The handling, or rather the comfort, is in a league of its own. It's simply superb. I no longer have to worry too much about humps as they just soak them up with ease. I'd agree with Mr Skudmissile's opinion from a ride in Wardy's car - it does feel more comfortable than OEM, but at the same time feels more planted, safer, "in control"

I've not yet had the opportunity to drive it hard, I think I may have to do a track day soon  but my initial opinion is that the eibach springs + koni FSD combo is top notch and works very very well :)

hope to complete my Koni fit tmrw am - thanks Xav for firmly twisting my arm to join the great JKM GB,

btw - for those who don't know - meeting up with Xav in Bahrain got me started into the modding bug - and he's still leading me astray!!

Mea culpa :o

But thank you for thanking me for it  :D

On my golfs I always used to just uprate the Dampers with koni adjustables, ( mainly cos the insurance companies always wanted to load premium unreasonably when lowering - go figure!)

they make a substantial difference controlling roll and body movement on bumpy roads, I throw this in just to illustrate their importance as part of the handling package.

If I had a choice Id do dampers over springs but not uprated springs without uprated dampers- lowering and apearance dont bother me though and road comfort does.

Having said all that the first furby I test drove had eibachs and standard dampers with the jabba roll bar and it drove very well but there were very few miles on the clock.

Eibach and FSd sounds like the ultimate for mixed road use.

just some thoughts

Told ya you'd love it ;)

Anybody know what the OEM dampers are,?

Probably Sachs

Hmmmm - great info guys - defo one to save for (Koni FSDs from Jabba) :D

Yep! Koni FSD's and Eibachs are the way to go:thumbup:

Yer Ive just been out in wardys car again. I so wish they were rubbish and crashy! Cos then i woouldnt be so tempted to part with my hard earned and buy some....... Damn you wardy

They are Bloody good, I cannot stress enough how good they are. It makes my car feel like its running on the alloy rims with no tyres at all :(

Has everyone bought a set yet then? Especially you John :P

To coin Steve's phrase earlier, you simply won't regret it

Cheers,

Steve

Basil: how much was your OEM dampers driven when you changed to Eibach springs?

This whole conversation started to make me also think about those Konis because I have set of Eibachs in garage waiting for a mate to install. But my car is only 1,5 years old and only about 17,5 thousand miles on the clock. You really think those OEM shocks will wear down that quickly. I had a -03 Octy 1.6i with Eibachs on OEM shocks and I drove a bit over 20k miles with no problems at all. Not even in MOT results showed any sign of any significant loss of damping power. But the OEM dampers was driven only 7k miles when the Eibachs came...

I really understand that FSD's are simply great but should I really really get them even if my OEM dampers are this new???

Help me guys! :)

Would people stop posting comment about FSD's. Keep your comments to yourselves :thumbdwn:

;)

The only question I have about the FSD's is do they make a difference to nose dive and body roll when pressing on? Only had a quick go of Irf's car last year when on the skid control day. Couldnt really comment as it was a smooth car park

Put simply YES, I changed mine to FSD's on a brand new after only a few hundred miles as have others on here and not one of them have looked back!

Absolutely but lets not get too carried away, they are brilliant at what they do but would not be able to compete with a car set up with quality coilovers for a track for example.

FSD's are put simply a brilliant all round package ideal for road use (which is where they'll spend 99% of their time) but respond extremely well by 'stiffening' when pressing on through the twisty's

I changed my springs and dampers after the car had done about 7.5k miles
