New Octavia Pedal.........

Featured Replies

Hi all,

After the rounds at the NEC last Friday.....did anyone pay particular attention to the accelerator pedal????

Didn't think much to it......what are they thinking!!!! Is there a reason someone can give for the floor-hinge???????

It wasn't a pedal from an auto-boxed octavia by any chance?

It's a van?

No, it's a manual........I was trying not to use loads of space and trimed it down.

Here you go:

I find the floor hinged pedals more comfortable - you pivot your foot on the heel to use the conventional type pedals so the floor hinged ones are ergonomically better IMHO. I used to drive a friends BMW which had one and i found the pedal comfortable.

That would mean that your foot was at right-angles to the floor?!?!? My foot seems to relax in towards the wheel arch when on longer runs. I must admit I haven't tried this type of pedal in a car, only in a van where you are more over the pedals and can see the benefit.

One of the reason for the floor hinged accelerator is that in an accident the pedal goes to the floor so there is less chance that you'll get your feet trapped, they seemed to have forgotten about the brake and clutch though.

the floor hinged pedal is less strain on the ankle....

My pedal is normal pressed to the floor anyway so I'm not bothered about either design

Like I say, not driven a car with his type of pedal......will have to have a test drive next month!!! :D

Floor-hinged pedal is also better for a cheap version of cruise control (a brick ;))

Used this pedal type in a Honda Accord Estate TDi I drove last week, can't say I noticed much difference.

i suppose when you've never driven anything but the "normal" style of pedal looking at the floor hinged type makes you think it would be wierd to drive with it, i doubt you'd really notice much difference once you'd got in and driven it for a few miles.

I would say it'd be easier on the ankle though.

I've driven 5 series bmw and the peal is floor mounted (and i seem to remember it being the same in the 3 series too).

I have to say, moving from the suspended type to a floor hinged version can be a bit weird at first, but after that I don't know whether it was just the nature of the BMW engine/throttle (2.2 Straight 6 iirc), but I had to push a lot harder to get the willing rev's of the Octy's 2 litre 4-pot....

Once moving, it was fine.

It is a retro design, as the Estelle/Rapid had these pedals too. Or it could be for comfort.

I find them more comfortable to use...even the Smart has one... :D

Rob.

Paul's 996 has a floor mount, find it comfy but flexes a little, feels a bit too cheap and plasticky for something like the 911.

Rob's smart has one apparently, but I never noticed that, must have been too busy cursing the rest of the car ;)

A bad workman blames his tools... :P

If you could tell me the situation where a sunvisor with holes in it is the right tool for the job, I'll retract my earlier statement :D

It reduces the glare without obstructing visibility. Pretty good idea IMHO... :P

So I want to block the sun from blinding me, and amazingly, the sun is in a spot where a 6" by 3" sunvisor will actually be in the right position, and they perforate it???

(not to mention that it's tiny, especially considering the size of the windscreen!)

What visibility do you need along the top 2" of the screen, watching for low flying aircraft?

(and surely if you need visibility, fold it up, put some shades on instead)

Could it be that they designed it with todays planetary events in mind?

The Clutch and Brake pedals are designed to simply come away from there mounts in the event of an accident serious enough to deform the pedal box.

Looks like a direct lift from my '67 Triumph Herald :P

the pedal is designed to be floor mounted due to new technology they have in the pedal..
