Hi all, I am in the throws of migrating from VW to Skoda (A short trip). I am interested in buying a Skoda Octavia 1.9 pdi Estate with the 6 speed gearbox. I would like to know your thoughts on this model in terms of reliablity, economy, comfort, performance and possible where I might find one.

on my 2005 1.9 elegance estate (25000miles)...3x wheel bearings, 2 battery, windscreen delamination, airbag lights, wind noise on rear quaterlight, trim falling off, 2 failed switches and other niggles.....

so, i wouldn't!!!

what sort of fuel figures do you get? Is it the 6 speed? Did you get all the niggles sorted out?

Hi - there is no such animal unless you go for the 4x4 estate, I persume you mean this model?

I have a 1.9tdi hatchback, no issues, returns very good mpg - high 50's most of the time, but the engine is still tight.

Hi Chugger thanks for info. Is the 4x4 estate the only one and how long have they been around? I am trying to make comparisons with VW's Mk IV estate for which there are several 6 speed options

If you want the 6 speed box the 2.0 TDi has that as standard. With regard to build quality, I had an early 1.9 TDi and had the same niggles as Chugger. My new 2.0 TDi so far has only got the windscreen delamination, it is obvious from this car that most of the problems have been addressed by Skoda.

If you are looking for fuel economy over performance then the 1.9 will do around 7-8 MPG more than the 2.0, but is not as satisfying to drive.

I've never experienced any of these... 100% satisfied!

Have to say, my current experience of my petrol Mk2 vRS has been very positive - although my windscreen will need changing soon.

Firstly, the standard issue 1.9 doesn't have a six speed box, nor does it need one.

Secondly, The later 1.9's are a heap better than the one you've got.

Thirdly, The 1.9 will do considerably more to the gallon than '7-8 mpg'; and as to whether it is more 'satisfying' to drive, well, that's a matter of opinion, one which I don't happen to share. It is perfectly possible to get over 60mpg, something which I and many others on this site regularly achieve.

I've recently sold my pride and joy (VW Golf)GTTDI and bought a 130 bhp Elegance Est "54" plate 6 speed. Great move for me. I bought from a local garage with 96k on the clock, backed by full s/h at the dealers. The turbo veins were sticking at about 3-3/half thousand revs and a new turbo was required, but i got a no quibble 1 months g'tee on anything and its fully sorted and running like a dream. I've also fitted a psi powerbox chip that i had on the Golf, and its now running at 152 bhp !!! Wow. I'd recommend the move, but do get some warranty, and use the car well in the warrenty period. Mine is an Octavia 1.9TDi 6 speed 4x4 bought from new Dec 06

Mileage 38-44 mpg, mostly A Roads & Dual carriageway driving.

Only hiccup was a leaking turbo within first week of ownership, fixed (new turbo) in a day under warranty

Owned a few Hondas before the Skoda and have to say I find the Skoda to be every bit as as good as the Honda's with the added bonus of 4x4

We are the same opinion as Mapgo both cars being 1.9 tdi except one is a 4x4 fuel 5,90 lts diesel -100km that's 45.73 miles per gal I think, 90% motorway driving. However they are both used mainly by my wife, I have a Nissan Sunny 2 dlx 1995 144000miles and never had a major problem in its life. Still uses same exhaust as from new, and boring they may be, but reliable they most defiantly are, more than any Jag, Ford, Opel, ect I have ever owned.

I think 1.9 is only avaiable with 5 sp - yoi get 6 with the 2lt TDI.

I have a 1.9 tdi with the DSG auto box, and that has 6 speeds. According to the trip computer mpg is 52 mpg but that is optimistic and it is nearer 47 mpg in reality. That is over my daily commute of 60 mls each way on a fast flowing A road, I don't hang about and the trip regularly shows and avg of 47-48 mph - steadier driving on better roads would see a big improvement on that.

After 50,000 mls in 2.5 years the car has been pretty reliable. 1 Wheel bearing, one windscreen (delaminating) and a cruise control stalk all under warranty with no hassle at all from the dealers.

Would buy another without question.

My '06' 2.0 tdi Elegance Estate regularly returns 60+ mpg equalling that of my previous Mk1 1.9 tdi.

The bonus is a lot nicer drive with oodles of torque when you need it.

In my experience dealers will talk down the 2.0 and try to sell you a 1.9. Still a good car but I think that the 2.0 is well worth the extra cost.

Probably tempting fate by saying it but my car has just clocked up 30k miles and is totally reliable. There again the old one was much the same even after 130k miles.

I have the 2.0TDi with the 6 speed box, and MPG with the car at 49K miles is now exceeding 60MPG on my daily commute. I tried the 1.9 and didnt like it, the 2.0 gearing is so much better. Cruising at 70mph on the motorway the 2.0 is so much quieter than the 1.9 due to the 6th gear.

I bow to your greater knowledge, I thoight UK 4x4 were all 2.0 tdi but I must be mistaken

Just to clarify guys and gals, 6 speed boxes are not only fitted to the 2lt. The Elegance Mk1 sal and est, late Mk1 octy's are 6 speed with 1.9 engines and 130bhp. Excellent on the road they are too.

due to impending divorce, and outstanding loan, can't afford to change, espec after losing 4 grand on this in 2 years

Gearbox should be geared to suit engine and vehicle. I wouldn't get hung up about having 5 or 6 gears. Had 6 on superb and 5 on this one.

Octavia 1.9 TDI Combi Tours (5 speed gerabox) are available here in Ireland - I have one under order at the moment. They are widely used by taxi drivers for large boot space, low mpg and reliability.

2.0 TDi DSG(6spd) L&K = No problems at all (best car so far)

Makes me smile when a friend of mine says how much he likes my car when he drives a 35k BMW Msport coupe:D

The only reason i can see to get the 1.9 instead of the 2.0 is fuel economy but when i test drove it i found the 1.9 came up a little short on power for my needs but whatever floats your boat dude.
