Hi i'm another newbie to the group :)

Been browsing for a while. My father has a Fabia and although I was hoping to buy a VW Golf i'm a little scared to spend what amounts to 18k (once you've added the furry dice et al) on a top end Golf so have been looking at the Fabia. Which is the best area of the forum to ask questions about the vRS options? I'm a little confused as I don't even know what ESP is for and would I need it? Also why are Xenon headlights so expensive and what benefits do they bring for that price? Are they really special? :o

Side airbags I presume can't be ignored as they are a safety feature, thus so far the list reads

Black Magic Paint

Cruise Control

Electric Sunroof

Front Passenger airbag de-activation switch

Side airbags

Xenon ?

ESP ?

Is it normal to get a discount on the total price of the car + options or do you pay as per the price list and thats it. Sorry for the dumb questions but i've been hiring cars for years so never had to think about this stuff.

Thanks for any info

Jifster this is exactly the spec I have on my furby apart from the sun roof as there is no point if you have aircon which the vRS gets standard.

Xenon's have a whiter than white glow and better night driving properties, I have had them on 2 cars now and normal lights don't cut the mustard anymore. They are so much brighter and easier on the eye's for night driving.

ESP (Electronic Stability Program) basically helps out in a skid situation, the system trys to balance the car by use of the brake IIRC so you regain control and drive out of the skid safely. Do a search on google for a full explaination.

Discounts are hard to come by but not impossible, this is due to a 3 month waiting list if the car has been built to a certain spec as the one you are looking has. We had to wait 3 months for ours as well but it was worth it in the end.

Hope this helps a little. Welcome to the site BTW pull up a seat and relax :D

Chavyboy, thanks very much for the info. Things are a lot clearer now :P

Is the air con the type of air con where you can have the windows closed on a baking hot day? I suppose the sunroof is going to have to get knocked off the list if Xenons & ESP are staying on as these items are really knocking up the price but sound like the sort of options I would regret not having. I do a lot of night driving between London and the Welsh border as I work shifts and like to drive at night without the daytime traffic. :D

Whats the stereo and speakers like in the vRS are they the same as the more standard fabia's? Not sure of my fathers model, I think it's a 1400 engine though and he paid about 8k for it. Very nice to drive.

Thanks again for the info

Aircon is very good in the Furby. Takes about 30 seconds to start getting really cold and about 3 minutes until you turn into an icecube :D

Speakers are really good in the furby but the head unit is the weak link. I have upgraded mine to an MP3 player and the sound system is now 110% better than the oem system.

Welcome. Xenon are worth every penny. As for the stereo. As Chavyboy says. The head unit is the weak link. I also have upgraded to a MP3 player (as well as other things :D . Check out the ICE section) Standard speakers are pretty good.

I'll third that!

xenons are great. I wasn't too sure about them tbh when I bought the car - bought them more as a "fasion" thing :ashamed: , but don't regret it one bit :D . Only down side is you become public night time driver enemy :(

Would agree on stereo being in general good, apart from the head unit. Fortunately, changing over is easy. ISO connectors are provided as standard, and head unit is standard size din, but you would need a strip to cover a hole left when you take out the oem one.

Aircon is rather nice as I've discovered over the last week or so

Where are you in London? I gather you go up and down the M4 a lot. You're more than welcome to have a look at mine with xenons at night so you can judge yourself whether you think they're worth it. Cost is due to expensive electronics and auto-levelling tricks. Also, if you have xenons,

Hello and welcome

How much is cruise from factory these days? Another saving could be KK. A member of Briskoda can retro fit factory cruise control for around

I just added my own options to entertain myself ;)

Like a hybrid turbo :D

I paid

The Octavia in Elegance spec (which the vRS isn't ;) ) comes with Climatronic AND sunroof - and I often drive with the sunroof open. If you can afford a sunroof for your Furby then go for it since it does make driving more enjoyable when the weather is right. :)

DGW if you drive with the sun roof open and the Climate control on don't you run the risk of damaging the aircon due to it having to work hard as the cold air is escaping out the sunroof ? Also you due to the unit having to work harder you fuel consumption will be alot worse than normal ?

Thanks for the info Xavier, I think i've seen cars with Xenons on the road. Do you get other cars flashing their lights at you thinking you are on full beam all the time or are they not that bad? I'm in North West London, between Camden and Hampstead at the moment, and I wish I could come and see some vRS's and what people have had done to them but all I seem to do at the moment is work and sleep, i'm hoping to get upto 'Le Car Centre' in Ballards Lane the weekend to have a peep and enquire about ordering my vRS though.

Thanks to all for all the info.

jifster

Welcome Jifster, I had that problem with people flashing when I had my polo gti but the xenons are definitely worth it they make a big difference.

No Probs.

TBH, I've never (or rather can't recall) people flashing me.

"Le Car Centre" is in my good books too ;) A couple of guys here bought their furbies from them and were well chuffed with the service

I'm going up to Heathrow on Sunday, around lunchtime. If you're around and you wanna take a look, let me know :)

My brain is in overdrive tonight

Does the vRS come with an alarm and has anyone heard of an alarm that can page or txt you when it is triggered even if it needs a mobile phone to be installed?

jifster

Welcome.

The alarm I have found is a voltage drop alarm, there are no sensors inside.

For what you want would be a addition to the current alarm.

I have heard of those types of alarm, which are worth considering, but you might as well have a tracker fitted, by the time you have got yout text/page, the car would be gone.

There is also an alarm that activates a double bubble round the car, 1st level activates a warning,( either noise or verbal ) into second level activates an audible alarm.

Unless you live in a high crime rate area, then just be sensible.

Don't ever leave anything in view that would remotely be considered worth taking ( empty car ).

If a thief REALLY wants the car, the will try anything to take it,although Diesels are supposed to be the most difficult to hotwire . ( good thread to verify )

A bit late with this reply. No, I don't drive with aircon on and sunroof open. Having a sunroof is good news for those days when fresh air motoring is appropriate, typically spring and autumn in the countryside. The sunroof is also very useful for getting rid of hot air is summer when the car has been parked in the sun, and prior to switching aircon on. It's a luxury with aircon fitted, but so are lots of other things which can be specced.
