eee pc

Any one else on here got one of these little things?

I went to Currys for a look at a router for a friend and end up buying one :o

Found one forum (feel free to mention or PM me more) and have got it running with a proper desktop. Its feels nice to be running with Linux again

I've got one. It rocks: just got to get bluetooth going on it.

I had one a while back but sold it on peabay as I couldn't get on with the screen resolution. Excellent little device for the money though. I'm waiting for the 9" screen version to come out this summer and I'll be getting one of those if I can find one.

EeeUser ASUS Eee PC EeePC Forum is probably the most comprehensive forum for mods and advice.

I have got one, running XP :D:D:D

Seriously good little bit of kit, I got mine from Toys R Us for £219 including postage.

The reason for running XP is that I use it as my Vag-Com PC and it's proved to be excellent for logging because of it's battery life and low current "pull" through the fag socket inverter.

I also use it for adding tunes to the Phatbox as the phatnoise music manager would always refuse to generate voice prompts under vista.

I also have one, the 4GB model and also running XP. I have upgraded the system ram to 2GB.

Good stuff.

I bought the 4Gb one and have stuck 1Gb in it as ive just put a 2Gb dimm into my MacBook Pro so had it laying around :D

Roy ive just joined that forum and looks really good so i might have to get a touch screen and usb hub done when ive got some cash though

You may have a problem with the USB hub, later models are missing some bits on the PCB, but you can do it if you sacrifice the webcam.

Be careful installing the touch screen, my son put one on his and it took a bit of work to do.

If you need any advice, then PM me and I can get him to explain 'How To@

Thanks for that.

Id hope that ill be fine as i do it ever day with Apple laptops but i know where you are if need it.

mannyo - you can now get a solder free one that connects to the pcb via the webcam port and has an extension to allow you to plug the webcam back in

Ive just bit the bullet and purchased one from Toys R Us.. again mainly to be a vagcom box.. no doubt will get the 9" one too when they come down in price a bit :D

Good work mate.

I take that you will be sticking xp on it then rather than using the standard os?

I'm waiting for the 900 model - the bigger screen and 20GB sound good.

Im putting XP on it at the moment, but it might be the ideal machine to try ubuntu and other misc crap on it too :D

Ive just hacked out my XP install to about 200mb :D

Im still in the Linux stuff mate im working my way down the wiki list :D

The problem with the 900 is going to be price. What with the bigger SSD, extra ram and the Windows XP license it will be cheaper to buy a normal laptop.

Well, im still fiddling, have re-installed windows about 3 times now lol

Im finding all the various bits and bobs with the bios's like overclocking to the full 900mhz... Screen scaling to higher res and brightness

The machine is *much* faster when running in max performance mode.. can even play HD video :D

Anyone know if I can install Linux onto a USB stick and use that to boot the eeepc when I fancy playing with something different?

I've got a spare 8GB USB stick and was thinking it has to be possible.

It's a great vag-com machine though :D and like ColGod with it running at it's full clock speed plays HD movies fine (well my 720P rips anyway)

it should be possible..... press escape on boot-up to get the boot menu :)

About the same price as a Dell Inspiron with a dual core cpu, 120gb HDD, 1GB of Ram etc.

Plus in the next 3 months there will be a influx of new contenders... the MSI wind, the Cloudbook, and offerings from HP and Dell... And then theres the Intel Atom cpu to lookout for which has been designed specifically for this kind of ULV application...

What sort of prices have been rumoured for the lare comers? Traditionally the smaller the laptop the bigger the price and the eee well and truly broke the tradition.

I nearly bought an eee, then heard about the one with the larger screen, unfortunately it's the same price as a 13.3" screen Vostro so i'm a bit torn!

Think i'll wait for all these new ones to appear and then make a decision, only problem is if you wait to buy computer gear there's always something better coming out so you end up never buying anything!
