Be interested in your review of the TSI 105 Rapid;

+1

I'm thinking it may be worth my while getting re-mapped a year or two down the line, as I understand the 86/105PS block is indentical bar the mapping. I think the 6th gear is neglible - the maps between the two look very similar until the engine starts revving a lot, which is when the 86PS starts to lose steam compared to the 105PS. This makes me suspect that the gearing is very similar between the two and the 6th gear is there for cruising more than anything.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong 'cause I specialise in (often ill-)educated guessing

That's my take on it too. The power on the 86 is capped via the sofware.

I believe the 105 is identical mechanically other than an extra gear ratio for more relaxed cruising. Which is why it's around 15kg heavier.

Both map to 130 apparently due to the same hardware with regards to the engine.

We have a 1.2tsi (105) in my wife's DSG Yeti and that's good to drive, despite being heavier and having more wind resistance than the Rapid.

It just lacks a bit of punch at motorway speeds. This is where the sleeker/lighter Rapid should show an improvement.

Rapid weighs 130kg less than my old vRS estate so power to weight should be good.

Only driven 60 miles in mine due to holiday!

Look forward to a project journal being started in the next day or so ;)

I look forward to seeing what you have planned. :D

Wasnt a fan of the Rapid when it was released but is slowly growing on me.

Am liking it in the yellow, somehow the shape suits the colour well

So then, when is the BossFox Skoda Specials museum opening for viewing lol :giggle:

My only experience of driving the TSI 105 has been limited to a couple of Fabia SE's with a five speed box and a Yeti with the 7 speed DSG. The Yeti felt energetic whereas the Fabia's five speed seemed to 'gag' the engines obvious flexibility, hence only going with the TSI 85/86 for ourselves, with the Monte and Elegance before that, which seem happier to work with only five gears.

Oh my good grief, I am so jealous it's indecent!

I don't mind the Rapid at all, but I'd like the estate/sport back version if it ever materialises, and I don't have the the guts to drive around in a bright yellow one.

What difference does it make if it started life as a petrol or a diesel if your only going to keep some of the body shell and half the interior? Lol

You've bought another of these as well?

And he tried to flog it to me :p

I've got to say Richard, this yellow theme is growing on me now............ after 2 weeks of telling you not to :D

It's OK, I understand now that you're holding on for the Rapid when I part-ex it. ;) :sun:

Agonising 12 week wait and you are trying to part ex it already :)

Production starts in August :)

It's because both Lee and Neil tried to talk me out of ordering a yellow one for two weeks because they are worried they'll have to sell it on one day as the yellow Skoda market is not exactly huge in East London.

Kept saying I should go for red.

But I am resistant to common sense salesman talk. :D

Dare to be different! :sun:

It's always good banter Richard :)

So are Preston motors the only dealer who bother to communicate with customers here on briskoda then? All my emails/calls to dealers within reasonable reach of me are going ignored - you wouldn't think a minimum 24hr test drive would be too much to ask when you're looking at committing to over £11k on a car!

You'll be hard pushed to get a 24 hour test drive. Even I only get 30 mins or so and known the garage for over 10 years.

Dare to be different? You mean like a big juicy engine in a small car? :)

Mine was about 5 minutes, I was quite happy taking it around the bypass, round a few roundabouts and back to the dealership. Love at first sight? Well, complacency at first sight anyway, I was suitably impressed.

Thecko - strange how you're having such a task buying a car of all things. It almost sounds like you live in Royston Vasey :giggle:

If you get the time, go in person as you immediately build a rapport with the salesman, I find.

I sat in it, to make sure I could live with the interior. :giggle:

Runcorn. I suppose that's a close enough description :giggle:

Lookers Stockport seem to have a supply of pre spec change SE's on discount at the moment, I might take a drive out there on Saturday

Thecko, there are dealers on here, but they hide in the shadows :bandit:

I just wanted to make sure it didn't have a three spoke steering wheel, as I like a four spoke.

Talk about a deal breaker...

Does anyone know the stock Rapid 17 inch wheel spec?

I can find it takes 215/40/17 tyres and Ad Lav said it's the same stud pattern as the Fabia VRS.

But what about the offset?

When you do go can you confirm they're the new spec SE's? I rang them out of curiosity and they didn't give me a straight answer. If they are the new SE's they are a cracking deal, especially as a ) they have metallic paint @ around £400 and b ) they are the 105PS. So almost 30% saving of list.

Will do, but at that price my immediate assumption is they're old spec.

Check out the PDF link on this Skoda Germany website;

Hope of help,

Offset is 46 on the 17" rims with 215 tyres.

You are an absolute star TP, as usual. :)
