MK1 Brake lights not working

Recommended Posts

Hi, had to make an account to post this has I am really stuck.

I've got a MK1 2002 Fabia, 1.4 MPI and all 3 of the brake lights are not working. I've checked and tested all the related fuses and checked the bulbs. I've had an EPC light on since it passed its MOT in early December but thought nothing of it, but now I think that might be related?

Yesterday I also got a new brake pedal switch for it and tested that, still nothing. I didn't actually fit it, I just got to the point where I could unplug the old one and plug the new one in, then I turned the ignition on and still no light coming from any of the three brake lights.

Can anyone help? The only thing I can think of now is that maybe for some reason the switch wont work until it is properly fitted? I really don't know.

Thanks in advance

Checked fuse 2? http://www.briskoda.net/forums/uploads/monthly_11_2013/post-73816-0-08408300-1383934639.gif

Usually if the switch fails, you'll get a warning light on the dash, so it does seem to indicate the switch. You could scan the car for codes also, as I think you get a code for the switch as well.

Thanks for the replies.

I checked fuse 2 which is listed as "brake light" and also checked another one which was listed as "clutch switch, brake light switch" or something but they are both fine.

I don't think its a genuine V.A.G. switch. Does that matter?

And I did think that maybe the switch wouldn't work unless completely fitted into position. I will fit the switch again fully when I'm back from work later tonight.

Not very safe driving around with no brake lights!

I dont think it matters if the switch is genuine or not, just possibly saying it could be a cheap faulty switch.

the main point being it has to be fitted to work really. Id imagine once you fit it correctly (check on here for a guide) it will sort your problem.

Good luck :)

Unfortunately didn't get a chance to do it last night - will update tonight.

I'm hoping you guys are right and that the switch wont work unless fully fitted, but this doesnt make much sense to me because surely if its plugged in then its plugged in and should work ?

And I've worked for a skoda specialist since 1993..

The brake light switch is quite a complicated thing for a switch. It's adjustable for stroke and will not work until its fitted into its bracket and twisted into position to set the stroke. I'm sure if you search there is a guide on line to fitting it.

Hi guys,

Sorry for taking so long to respond - I've had a busy couple of days and haven't had a chance to fix the lights until today.

I've just replaced and fitted the brake light switch properly and lo and behold - it works! Thanks for all your help and I'll be sure to post my next problem on here. I still don't quite understand why it has to be fully fitted in order for it to work but I won't lose any sleep over it.
