Skoda Superb 2011 1.4 tsi estate

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Got a rental car while my 2010 Octy FL 1.6 tdi 4x4 is in the garage. This is a 2011 Superb 1.4 tsi estate. Manual, not DSG.

Wow, I was really surprised of the litle petrol engine. More then enough power even in this large car (even tho its not that much heavier then the Octy).

Only downside is that it has a low towing capacity. I have a camper that is 1300kg and the Superb can tow 1400kg maximum. Is this because of smaller brakes?

Lol, could make a deal with the dealer to swap cars, is really tempting at this point. I am afraid im gonna miss the 4x4 in the winter, but is good to avoid all the DPF, glow plugs, heating problems with the diesel...

Any thoughts on the 1.4 tsi 125hp? Is this a reliable engine?

Thanks!

I have done 15,000 miles in my 1.4tsi 2009 twin door with no problems, I have never had to add any additional engine oil. It has rattled (timing chain or tappets) from new for the first two seconds after starting. There have been reports of early poor quality timing chains stretching and tensioner problems in the past, but I am not certain if it applied to this code of engine or another similar 1.4L VW engine produced around the same time.

This size of the car - weight - with so small engine - I'll never understand why they even think about designing those combinations ?!?!

Sorry, nothing to add, but very interesting to read your thoughts on the 1.4 engine.

Superb doesnt weigh much more then the Octavia, its only 1420kg or so. So its quite light weight for such a big car.

The 1.6 tdi is much slower. You would be positively surprised with the 1.4 tsi!

I think you are right.

I own a Greenline and I am very happy with its performance given my driving style and needs. I suspect the 1.4 feels quite perky and may fulfill my needs should I change my Superb (for another one!)

And what revs do you need to keep it on so it won't feel sluggish??

Its actually quite strong at low revs. Feels like a diesel on the low torque, but still have plenty grunts on the high revs.

U can go low on speed and still pick up quick in 5th and 6th gear.

I still like my Superb 2014 1.4 tsi. Pulls surprisingly well from 1500rpm, only does 2000rpm at 60mph , usually does late 40's mpg (except this week fully laden with people and luggage in France) but my favourite bit is the "silence" at tickover.

There is no DPF, no EGR, clutch slave cylinder is external to gearbox, most have SMF & water pump is fed by auxiliary belt. NB oil filter must NOT be over tightened

The engine being so quiet at tickover has confused me with stop start - a couple of times if S/S hasn't kicked in I've panicked on setting off when I don't hear relay click and tried to restart the engine, difficult when engine is still running!

A while ago I needed to hire a car and was given a 1.4 Octavia...I genuinely thought it was a 2.0 unit, it was so spiritely. Fantastic thing.

I know of 2 1.4 TSi that are on as Taxis :nerd:

Could not believe that they would be allowed as the rule used to be no smaller than a 1.6 but with the turbos they are producing 125bhp so rules had to be changed to accommodate smaller engines.

As above I drove 1 and could not believe that it was a wee teeny 1.4 (The devil works   under the bonnet ).

It shouldn't  work but it does...

A friend of mine has a new model Audi A4 1.4 ACT - fantastic car. Surprisingly "nippy" but isn't as economical as his previous Octavia 1.4 tsi

Oh dear, just filled up after travelling through France (4 adults 3 between 6ft 4" & 6ft 7"  + rammed boot) and cruising around the Dordogne. Tank to tank just over 37mpg - I usually get about 46 mpg.  One slight problem - with all that weight in the back I managed to scrape over a couple of speed bumps

The 1.4 tugged it along OK even up some steep motorway hills - as long as you were over 1500rpm
