DieselMontes BarnFind Subaru Justy
This is my new to me 1992 Subaru Justy. It's a 1l Carbureted version and while most were 4wd, this one is front wheel drive. It is a one owner car with 37000 miles, bought new from my work in 1992. Has been sat in a barn since 2010, started up and drove back to my work. Very stale fuel in it but it runs and drives well considering. Interiors like new inside Engine bays dirty but original. Original Spare tyre even Did sit outside for about a week before I could get it home, happily seems pretty watertight. Up on the lift before I got it home, solid underneath and the mid section of the exhaust is brand new. The weather turned ****e so it went into the garage later. Not long after I took this pic, I took a quick trip to roscommon to pick up a powerflow (stainless) backbox for this, the backbox is actually solid but the tailpipe looks a bit crumbly. All I have done to it so far is put a new battery in it. Have Ordered/Got: -Fuel Filter -Oil and Filter -Air Filter -Backbox Definitely needs tyres as these are ancient Michelins, 145R12, no profile on them. Original fit michelins can still be got but they're 90 euro each plus fitting. Probably get something a bit less than that. So far as I can tell, everything works as it should. Even the original radio works. This won't take much to get it good for the road, If I'm less than a grand into it at the end, I'll be happy.

Diesel Monte's 2001 Skoda Fabia "Project vRSDI"

I have it got but I don't want to spill until I get it home. What I will say is, it's a barn find, is very rare as most of them have rotten away and it's a prime candidate to take to FOTU next year.

The outside of this is more or less back together now. Fogs aren't plugged in but they're bust anyway. Few other odds and ends need sorting, big one being an interior. Engine runs very well, very smoky on pulls, whether that'll clear out or not I'm not entirely sure. I think I may try for mot on this, beat on it through the winter. Would be nice to have a spare car for a while. Also, I might have another car coming my way, a non-skoda project. Not a big project by any stretch but I wanted to see the vrs "done" before I get this new car.

Figuring out which gearbox my car has.
Hello everyone, bit of a longshot but I'm trying to figure out which gearbox the vrs I've bought has fitted to it. As I understand it there were a few different ratios of boxes fitted to these cars through the years. The sticker in the boot is pretty rough and I can't make out the code for the gearbox unfortunately. I can't find the little service booklet that has a copy of this sticker either. This was first registered August 2004 if that's any addition. I'm guessing the gearbox code will be stamped on the gearbox somewhere, does anyone have any ideas where that code might be on the gearbox? Thanks.

Front speakers
A good way to improve sound quality aside from speakers is sound deadening. A little goes a long way as there is not a lot put into these cars standard. And you can decent stuff for a lot less than the likes of halfords are wanting. I'm gonna order a pair of the ones Stewart linked as both my mk1s have blown speakers. Anything will be better than what's in either of mine!

Bit more on the vrs. Noticed its got solid cupra bushes in Filled over the rust hole on the sill Primed both sills And hit them with bedliner Quarter panel is done Bits of rot on the rear quarters are painted in See a few spots on the bedliner where it's not perfectly straight. Will do it again. Whole car will need a heavy cut and buff, and wetsand in and around where its been painted.

Not sure if I should or not. I think I'll throw MOT on it and run it as a beater through the winter, but the shell on this is rough enough that I don't want to keep it long term. Once the shell goes I still want to reshell it into my mk1.

vRS Restoration/Upgrades
Good shout that, posted this video a hundred times but it's of a shock from my mk1 fabia that was good and a shock from my mk2 fabia that was dead but had no misting or leaks same as you. Shock of the mk2 was in and around 104k miles iirc, original from 2012. An outing to the Sally Gap is what finished them off.

312mm brakes can be found reasonably cheap on marketplace regularly. Be wise to join some of the parts groups on Facebook because you'll find stuff on there often enough.

Steering rack bush is a nice cheap mod that gives a bit more steering feel. I have the one superpro makes in 2 of mine and I felt it made a difference. Pretty cheap iirc, think I payed just over £20. Dogbone bush is a good one too, few options there depending on what you're looking for. Again pretty cheap, would run you £40-£50 for a powerflex one.

More work on the vrs Very quickly slapped paint on the rear brakes. More work filling in a few dents on that quarter panel Doing a lot of wire wheeling and kurusting on it and poked through just a little bit of the sill No holes on these little bits luckily.

Glad I've seen this so I know that the intercooler on my vrs is mounted "properly" (wonky)

I'd say you're right on the money actually. Seems to be decent reviews for longline exhausts, so must be a decent enough company. Got the exhaust sort of back together. Was a pig, and the absolute hack job of a backbox mount failed so had to hang it with zip ties after this video was taken. It's remarkably quiet to be honest, not complaining. Doesn't look pretty here but it's not dragging the ground so It'll do. Also started painting the wing.

Had it out for a bit, its running fantastic Boosting well, gear changes are superb. Still open downpipe, had a look under it and I wasn't bothered trying to get the exhaust back together this evening. If anyone knows what backbox this is, or what company this sticker belongs to, I'd love to know

Set about getting this fired up this evening. Had a bit more work to do than I realised, biggest headache out of this whole thing was fitting the return properly. Mounted it to the turbo at first but found out it needs to be fitted to the block first, THEN you need to somehow slip a gasket onto the piece connected to the turbo and tighten all up. Must have took 40 minutes to just sort that out. Nearly gave up there it was that bad. Pushed through, changed the oil, got the downpipe on and gave it a few cranks to build oil pressure. I pulled the fuse for the "diesel computer", fuse 14 on this, so it would crank but not fire. Seriously good battery on this, same battery that came with it all I did was charge it. Made sure to record the first start up Died after a few seconds seemingly run out of fuel. After cranking it a bit more it fired again and stayed on this time. Changing the fuel filter must have got air in somewhere. Gave it a few revs even, found where the popcorn limiter is on it Not brave enough to let it pop and bang away just yet. Didn't even move it under its own power but I was happy to leave it there for tonight. Extremely impressed at how healthy that engine sounds, given the miles and having bought It with a grenaded turbo. I'll take it for a few laps next day.

Fitted my diy shifter bushes. Feel great and if I'm honest they're a nicer job than what I did to the Monte with tigerseal. Got them adjusted, 6th is a bit stiff but other than that I'm very happy. Gaskets came in all genuine from the dealership. Turbo on, easy enough to hang the gasket on the studs. Intake manifold was a bit tricky because it doesn't have studs to mount the gasket on, so used zip ties to hold it in place temporarily. Took a snap down one of the intake ports, looks good considering the miles and having recently had blown turbo oil chucked down it. Left it at this for tonight. Most likely will get it running tomorrow.

Increasing Steering Feel on a Mk2 Fabia Monte
Currently on 215/40 17s The standard setting for this was "1" for "Heavy vehicles" (pic related comes up when I try change it in vcds) Went through all the settings 1-6 and 2 is the heaviest from what I can feel. Really don't want to be farting about changing wheels but I may end up going that route if I feel I need to.

Increasing Steering Feel on a Mk2 Fabia Monte
Hi all, I'm looking for any ways to increase steering feel through vcds. I have new everything on the front of my car, including a poly steering rack bush and caster increase bushes. These have helped but I still feel like there's room to improve. I have vcds and played around with it. Changed the coding to the "sports" setting, again helps but not enough. I'm looking for any other ways to add more "weight" to the steering. If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate them. Thanks.

Also swapped the grille And because I was really bored I took the cable ends of the shifter off the car to clean and fill with urethane. They were very soft in fairness. Messy as ever. Also did a spare gearbox mount as I noticed the vrs is sitting low on the gearbox side. Since that was all off it only made sense to strip and regrease the rest of it. No pictures but it feels a lot smoother now.

Few more odds and ends done when I have not much else to do. Changed the crunched wing Also did some Rust Proofing, ish. Was high build primed and quickly painted over with some silver left over. Intended on getting the correct red mixed up and then forgot. Also changed the Fuel and Oil Filters ahead of firing it up again. Oil filter was definitely old, no chunks of metal hiding in it happily. Needed a breaker bar to free the oil filter housing cap off, weird considering these only need to be snug. Fuel filter was swapped easily, only took a few minutes. Same as the oil filter it seems pretty old. This is what I drained out of it.
