  1. the police have to use their power of discretion, if they didn't evry person parked on double yellows, using bus stops to speak on the phone. driving with road tax a day or so out of date or havinga bulb out on their car would be getting done. This isn't the normal case of no insurance because of being a scumbag or someone trying to dodge the payments, this is an honest mistake made by an honest person who genuinely did believe they were insured. A court case would not have been in the interests of public justice, a stern talking to would have put her right and probably made her uber careful the next time she takes out an insurance policy to read the restrictions.
  2. traditionaly (80's and earlier) diesel was always cheaper and it also offered much better mpg so most of us think of it as the way forward. with diesel costing nearly 10% more and mpg figures for petrol cars getting closer to diesel figures especially in the FSI and tfsi engine (dependant on driving style) economics is becoming less of an argument. One thing I can say, you can tune a modern diesel for very little money and still see good mpg figures with the addition of a good tuning box. tuning petrol cars is more expensive as there's always the initial outlay for remaps which arent cheap.
  3. As above, it is an MOT failure to show a white light to the rear of the vehicle, it's also an offence. The fact that the light bulbs lighting up the rear numberplate are hidden from view should keep you well within whats legal and proper. In essence you are not showing a white light to the rear, you are only showing white light reflecting on your number plate and the bulb is not shining directly to the rear.Exactly the same as OEM bulbs.
  4. Agreed with road speeds etc, exception to this with the diesels must be in 1st and 2nd gear. they are next to useless if attempting to get to a high speed quickly. The torque is a huge benefit if your pulling weight such as five adults or a caravan on a hillstart but mostly the very short 1st and 2nd gears can be quite annoying, especially in start stop traffic or motorway queues. tak
  5. Had (hot hatch performance) diesels for a few years Golf TDI 150. Vectra SRI CDTI 150BHP, running DTUK tuning box giving 190bhp Now running a Octy 2 VRS TFSI. As said above both have pros and cons and your budget and average miles will dictate whats best for you. I used to do a 60 mile commute each day hence the diesels, then got stationed 8 miles from home, At this point I again could move to petrol with diesel being so much more expensive to fill up it made sense. Also the initial outlay for a diesel is starting to outweigh the pro of more mpg as you have to do lots of miles. I never thought I'd go back to petrol, when the price of diesel got up to 130+ per litre it was time to change. especially when the petrol vrs is now returning 33mpg every day. My diesels were only 10 - 12 mpg better so it's cheaper for me to run the petrol...... I'd always be open to going back to diesel should my daily commute go up to 60 miles+ again as they were crackin cars and still put a smile on my face whenever I gave them the beans.
  6. jUST HAD A WEE FLUTTER WITH MINE 2006 (06) Octavia Vrs TFSI 30K valued at 6850, paid 8200 for it in October from a non franchise dealer Not too bad, not a tasty enough offer to tempt me though...lol
  7. Just used this garage, found them to be very indifferent and the blonde lady behind the service desk was civil....no more than that! Booked the car on 5 days ago explaining I would wait on the car rather than leaving the dealership, Arrived 9am, waited an hour before the car was taken to the workshop, car returned to front of garage by mechanic at 1030am. I assumed it was awaiting a part or further work, by 1130 I decided to ask if they were waiting on a part etc as I had seen the car sitting there for an hour and a half. She checked and said "no, that's your car ready" no explaination of why she hadn't let me know and no apology for wasting an hour and a half of my time. Last time I drive a 100 mile return journey to a dealership who's staff at the front desk think they can treat customers like this. Would be different I'm sure at most other dealerships (I hope) I'll be trying Ingrams of Ayr the next time I need a dealers services.
  8. A local garage to me has it's fuel at 2p per litre more expensive than anywhere else, he's the only garage for 6 miles so thinks he's got the monopoly. I only ever use him for the free air hose now and on one occasion I put a tiny bit of fuel in just to get me to the next closest garage. strangely enough, his forecourt is always empty!
  9. That's amazing! defo one for the show scene! I'd send a pic into Top Gear if I was you....bound to get a mention, might not be a positive one as they are a bit unpredictable on there.
  10. looks like I'm now having the same problems, warranty runs out on the 14th so only a few days to get it sorted, just tried Henrys skoda in Glasgow......close at 12pm on a Saturday, now got to wait till Monday to book it in... might be a good thing to have it plugged into the diagnostics before the warranty runs out and could save a few pennies if they find anything.
  11. Just thought I'd update this thread. I now have 4x michelin pilots and the runbling has all but disappeared, looks like it was the Eagle F1s'. I can't give any opinion on how the michelins compare handling wise as I never really push the car, they do feel as good on the corners with my economical driving and actually a bit better in the wet. Happy days!

  13. I got 36mpg last night on purely motorway driving at 80ish over a 240 mile round trip. completely unmolested car and I drove sensibly the whole way, might I have a problem as this seems a bit low compared to Mater.
  14. I know what you mean with the road noise...I've just had to accept it. I've never had a car in the past with a more noisy ride and I have 30 odd cars. All the same used to drive the odd army landrover up and down the motorways with a canvas roof and nobbly tyres.....god did I love them things and the noise they made! I dunno if there would be a good cure for the noise problem other than researching the quietest road tyres and trying them.
  15. Good clip, had to watch it in silence as my speakers are broken. Nevertheless, looks like good fun and the skud done itself proud!
  16. Thinking about buying some Heko wind deflectors from ebay, just over 30 quid inc postage. Has anyone fitted them or know of any reason why not to do it. I want to get started on adding some nice touches to the car and these seem like a cheap cheerful and functional start, next should be the colour coded grille and then the external b pillar trims. Never seen the b pillar trims on another 0cty2 in the flesh but seen one on youtube today while searching for fitting instructions for a BOV, looked very nice! Never mentioned, it was overseas and the car had all round limo tints, so the black pillar trims really did look good, if I find the video again I'll post a link.
  17. I'm the same as above, don't really agree with there being a lot more mkII VRS' around, I just think the MKI is a lot more affordable for the younger driver with less choice due to cashflow etc. When the mkII gets down to the 4k mark you'll see loads of young lads in them once the beardy crew sell them on. By the way, I'm not one of the beardy crew, I'm another car nut who just happened to think the mkII VRS was an absolute bargain and a hidden gem among the medium size sporty hatchbacks
  18. Sounds great Sharkie boy, I wouldn't go worrying about leaks until they happen, life's too short to go worrying about what might happen! I'm sure it came with some sort of warranty to cover the unexpected anyway Wish I had they means to put a full milltek on mine!
  19. All these vectras and Mondeos will end up being bought up by taxi firms at special rates. They won't sell them to the general public at the same price as they need to milk the public for what they can get. same idea as what's going on here with Skoda octavia 1's on 58 plates!....all taxis THtre's also a deal some Vauxhall dealers are doing were you get a free corsa along with a brand new vectra bought at list price.
  20. As a man experiences limits, he is motivated to give more.
  21. I've just changed my main and dipped beams to Osram nightbreakers, they do look very good and hive p[lenty of light over the OEM ones. I changed the sidelights to philips blue vision, they now look nice and white. All in all very happy with the result, they still don't look like xenons to those who know what they're talking about. Seen a few threads stating the Osram nightbreakers don't last very long, on this note I've kept all my original bulbs as spares...for when the inevitible happens.
  22. I'm normally a full day to wash, clay wax and seal my car, could easily spend two days on it if the wife would let me. Heard a lot ofolk talking about Colinite with great results, I'd give it a go if I had some. the best wax I ever used was Swissvax, went on like margarine and buffed up to a pristine finish, think it cost my mate 70 quid for a tiny pot....well worth it as it'll last years.
  23. The handling still feels crisp, I'm quite a sedate driver so don't know if it makes any difference during hard cornering etc, the handling on roundabouts and twisty roads feels very good and balanced. I've never got any weight in the back of the car other than the spare wheel and tools so I don't think I'd be improving anything by raising the rear tyre pressure
  24. 2006 Octy 2.0tfsi VRS I had my pressures set to 30psi rear and 32 psi front, normally getting average of 32mpg to and from work. I had decided to go to 34psi front and 32 at the rear, got 37mpg:D average to and from work and the car feels a bit sharper. I'm now thinking about going to 36psi at the front just to check for any further differnces, if no change I'll just go back to 34 at the front Still getting the loud rumbling from the Good year Eagles F1s' but it doesn't bother me too much as I know they're due a change in the spring and they're not far off the tread markers.
  25. I changed the fronts and rears around and I now have solved the problem....for the rear anyway...now the front is rumbling. They are about 1/2mm before I reach the depth markers, next tyres I get I'll stick to the normal tread pattern type and see if it's just been the tread pattern. Rhe tyres are worn evenly without any issues. I changed the front psi from 32 to 30 psi, the noise sounded worse so I changed up to 34 psi at the front and it was much the same just higher pitched. I'll be changing the tyres in the spring to see how it goes.
