Hello - DSG 7
We've a DQ200 in our 2015 Polo GTI, which has been faultless for the five years we've had it. Also have friends with a 2016 Fabia 1.2 which they've owned from new, with the same DSG, which has been equally faultless. I suspect the early problems from choice of oil pre-dates both these cars. If I was buying a '21 reg car I don't think I'd be worried. Gaz

E-bike
Since leaving work I've been trying, steadily, to improve my appalling physical fitness. Amongst other things I've been gradually increasing how far I cycle, and reducing how often I use any power assistance. Today I went past the 30 mile in one go milestone, and am feeling pretty good about it π: Started at 85% battery, finished at 51% battery. Only power assist I used in the first 15 miles was for about 50' getting quickly across a busy road, and probably the same trying to get up a public footpath on the Downs which was made up of deep and sodden leaf mould (failed, and it was too steep to ride back down). All in all a lovely ride. Gaz

I cycled down a gem of a lane I'd not previously been down just outside of Polegate. As I got to the end of the lane I rounded a corner to find a lovely little church I'd no idea was there: The steepening slope on the right is the South Downs and where I ran out of cyclable surface for my bike. Beautiful area - I'll go back to take some photos of the cracking views over the Downs and Folkington Estate. Gaz

Is the Transport Secretary set to introduce a 20mph speed limit for cyclists?
Does that mean weβre I to be neither competent nor careful that I couldnβt be accused of dangerous cycling? π Gaz

Possible head gasket issue on my Mk1 Octavia VRS
Not sure you'll be able to without becoming a Freedom member. John's one of our moderators, and will be able to do it for you. And agreeing with Mac, with the Mk1, I took the opportunity to check the pots, valves, stem seals, followers, crank and big ends, before having the headwork completed. Would've been daft not to! Gaz

Possible head gasket issue on my Mk1 Octavia VRS
It's not really comparable financially, as it was probably 16 years ago our Mk2 Golf's HG went. Repair then was in the region of Β£500. I bought a Mk1 Golf with a failed HG in 2007. Stripped and rebuilt the engine myself, albeit having the head skimmed locally. Neither the Mk1, nor Mk2 had any HG problems after they were repaired. if a job's worth doing... In my opinion, a simple HG failure and remedial work should not result in failure a few weeks later, unless something was missed (e.g. another problem) or work was not completed properly. 186k miles doesn't necessarily mean the engine's dead, nor any more worn than one with under half that mileage. It depends on how well they've been looked after. Gaz

Recommend me a cycle saddle bag
Some time ago, and without much thought, I bought a frame bag that sits astride the top tube and velcro's around the yoke. It doesn't fit well, not much room in the pockets either side, and I found out the other day that my phone doesn't fit in the clear plastic pouch that sits abreast the frame. I can squeeze what I need in it, but it doesn't fail to disappoint. At Airborne last weekend, we cycled down. Sally left her bike with me and toddled off for a wander around the display areas that don't interest me. It started to rain π Went quickly from too warm for a cycling jacket, to overcast, breezy and wet βΉοΈ So I've got myself a pac-a-mac type half-zip cagoule type thing. It's approx. 8"x6"x2": It won't fit in my current storage. I don't want to pinch or crush it. I don't really need to store anything else. So I reckon a simple (i.e. no multiple pockets, nets or internal compartments) saddle bag should suffice. Don't want anything large that makes me look like I've got a baboon's ar$e. Probably 1 to 1.5ltr. Brooks B17 saddle if it makes any difference, and I'll probably want to move one or two of my rear lights from the seat post to the back of the bag. I'm having a good ol' rummage on the interwebnet, but given my last purchase was quite underwhelming, I'd be very interested on any recommendations, and equally any avoid at all costs/don't waste your time's. Possible head gasket issue on my Mk1 Octavia VRS
Our Mk2 Golf GTI 16v had the same symptoms and was confirmed HG failure. Didn't have time to DIY, so went to a local VW indy. Once fixed it was right as rain. I wonder if the petrol in the oil is a separate issue. Worn bores or rings might be causative given the mileage, and the fact power improves with temperature (i.e. compression). Although that could also be injectors/injector loom, or several other possibilities. It'll be interesting to see what your mech says. Gaz

Possible head gasket issue on my Mk1 Octavia VRS
Better the devil you know unless your mechanics advice is that the engine is shot. For the price of a head skim, gasket, bolts, belt and tensioner(s), if the rest is sound I wouldn't replace it with one of unknown provenance. There was a chap on here years ago (Rotodiesel?) who was in the know/trade and said on more than one occasion that there wasn't much in it between the five and six speed boxes. Gaz

Unexplained Coolant loss
Think positive - it's sounding good so far It'd be interesting to know what the error code was, as this might point to where the problem was specifically. My 2015 vRS had a fault on the Coolant Check Valve. Didn't boil over or overheat, but it did cause the turbo to grenade itself due to a lack of coolant, which was an expensive fix βΉοΈ Gaz
