Why are UK Car Registration Plates going to 70 in September?
Actually the old system could do 42 years depending on which end you put the letter but either way for some reason I find them a bit easier to remember... I can even remember the registration of my parents cars from when I was a kid... And I'm 52 now 😀

TBH it doesn't matter what the system is so long as each car has an individual identifier - that's the basis for the registration numbers - no need for region or year really. Personally I much preferred the old style single letter for a single year as they are easier to remember - but the car industry didn't and wanted two per year IIRC. Diplomatic plates and the channel islands have it sussed - one or two letters plus a series of sequential numbers - easy

Most reliable diesel engines
For longevity you'd be looking at a 1.9. no DPF and if serviced regularly they can be pretty bombproof

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
I know - I was being cynical and faecetious. As to mis-sold - you can't seriously expect us to believe that the ONLY reason you bought a car was its low on-paper emissions? You have a Scout DSG according to your profile so if you were choosing on emissions only there would have been much better options to choose - it is therefore unlikely you would have chosen differently if you had known the emissions were slightly different in real life compared to a test bed and that your real reasons for the purchase of the Scout lay elsewhere (lifestyle / towing / 4x4 ability / raised ground clearance / looks / equipment / price etc.). And yes I know all about litigation and the courts - it's part of my job to be aware of contract terms and the legal implications etc. and I have family members who are solicitors. It doesn't stop me holding an opinion though and not does it affect my opinion that society is becoming too litigious and claims centric. Hopefully the courts will see sense. Cheers!

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
Ah yes - the 'mental anguish' of an owner driving a car that performs differently on the road to under static test conditions - something that most owners wouldn't have cared less about, or would have been oblivious to, if there wasn't a bunch of lawyers involved telling them they might be able to get some compensation for it! Sorry but in my book that doesn't count.

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
Having read the wording of the EPA CAA it does reference 'defeat' of systems etc. In relation to how they were originally intended to work and is obtuse in relation to the application of this requirement to testing. It is therefore open to interpretation and does represent a loophole that many manufacturers, not just VW, have taken advantage of. Compliance was only required and certified via static testing not on the open road, representing another loophole that manufacturers used. This is now being closed retrospectively but hindsight is a wonderful thing and cannot be used to jutify compensation. Having said that, unless personal financial loss can be proven there is no entitlement to compensation. Which is different to the imposition of a fine under the CAA.

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
Let's face it... The only people that will benefit from this class action are the lawyers who've seen an opportunity to screw both owners and vw and many owners have seen an opportunity to express false outrage to try and get a few quid for something that has had a negligible impact on them. Maybe it's just me but I'm very cynical about it on both counts.

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
Even so that still doesnt equate to personal financial loss that requires compensation??

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
What false pretences... it passed a test it was designed to pass but the test regime was flawed and had loopholes so VW used them. Again what direct personal loss have owners endured that now requires compensation... none in reality.

2007 Octavia dashboard (Clock, fuel milage etc...) resetting
Ah i see... sounds like a lack of a permanent feed to the dashboard... daft question but are all the fuses ok? If so then my guess would be a dry joint on the circuitboard for the dash clocks

2007 Octavia dashboard (Clock, fuel milage etc...) resetting
There are two settings for that data .. overall and trip iirc (we never use them) If he has it set to trip it will rest each trip unless you do a second trip within half an hour if the first. From memory you can tell which is which by a small differ 1 or 2 in the display. I think it needs to be 1 for overall but the info will be in the manual

Email Client
Were finding it pretty good and easy to use TBH and it works which is more than can be said for the MS Mail and Calendar app! At the minute we're only using it for one account but I'm pretty certain the info about it says it will merge the inbox for multiple ones and will create replies using the relevant account etc.

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
I really can't see that being much at all to be honest and in terms of overall general depreciation due to other factors such as mileage and condition it must be negligible. I think I've yet to see someone show clear evidence of loss.

VW Compensation Claim (diesel gate)
I still want to know what actual financial loss claimants have endured that deserves any compensation payout whatsoever...

New Landrover Defender are you up for one?
Depends - some Local Authorities may have relaxed their local rules but the onus is still on reduced numbers of spaces and promotion of Public Transport and 'active travel' (ie walking and cycling). I do agree with you though - some of it is daft and there needs to be flexibility to suit the location.

Touche George - you maybe want to lighten up yourself at times if you don't like receiving comments like you make... 😉 Anyhow - back to work now

So they double park on both pavements - even worse! If they parked on the road and not on the footway they probably wouldn't then double park... but I guess some are too lazy to use their legs and think it's a god given right to park outside their house. The other thing about that photo was that they appear to be parking on a corner / bend restricting forward visibility?

The road looks wide enough to not have to park on the footway though regardless

New Landrover Defender are you up for one?
Not so... You regularly post that farmers are loaded in numerous threads. However we agree that thier income varies and there are different types of farmers

I see you've edited your post since my reply to try and put a different slant on your comment. It would make the continuity better if you refrained from adding and left alone

New Landrover Defender are you up for one?
@Roottootemblowinootsoot Indeed there are - so it would be helpful if you refrained from inferring they were al loaded and tarring them all with the same brush 😉

New Landrover Defender are you up for one?
Indeed - stereotypical posh 4x4 parking taking place there that deserves to be reported as it's a ticketable offence! As an aside the backend of that Defender is pretty fugly...

The farmers that I know in Northern Ireland certainly aren't making pots of money, or in the market for Teslas or high end premium 4x4's... most tend to run a reliable pick-up for workhorse duties and something like a Kia Sportage for family duties - so they aren't spending new Defender money on either.

Email Client
For info it appears you need an add on in Thunderbird to sync contacts with gmail... but two options to download are provided by Mozilla to do this.

Email Client
Hi Folks, Just a quickie to gauge recommendations for an email client for W10. We've been using the in-built Mail and Calendar app since we got a new machine (courtesy of @robt100 on here) and have now noticed that it fails to download some attachments (much to my wife's annoyance given she hates using web-mail). Currently thinking Mozilla Thunderbird may be the way to go but happy to hear any recommendatons. Cheers!
