  • I bought the same setup, but found that the tank contained zero filtering material, so the catch can wasn't exactly catching much and because the vent was under the bonnet, the cabin always used to sm

  • Well, let's just say that he's the king of modding Fabias......

  • Thanks Ross - you're quite right of course - but I wanted to avoid any hot air at all coming into the intake.

Not a great shot, but you can see the catch can at the bottom left.

Dave, whats the wiring on the hose coming off the fuel rail?

That's my fuel heater. Heats the diesel to it's optimum burn temp, also heats biodiesel to the right temp.

Any good?

All I can say with confidence is it heats the fuel. Whether is has any performance benefits or drawbacks I don't know, if only I had a rolling road. :)

Hi guys,

I have read all of this and am still a little unsure how to mount the catch can.

I have purchased one, had a quick look inder the bonnet and also read these 230+ comments. can anyone help a little with best sollution to the mounting problem.

thanks,

Any pics of your can or does it have any brackets?

i've mounted mine on the side of the airbox. using bracing on the inside. this means i can still put the top cover on and it doesn't look OTT.

i'll get some photo's sorted hopefully over the weekend.

That hose will be mint, cant remember what size, but that site looks like a bargin.

My atmos CCV pipe is still doing fine too. :) No loss of oil and safe in the knowledge clean air only is going into my engine. I don't really have room for a catch can anyway now.

Mine does accumulate oily watery muck. My can is see through so I get to watch it accumulate. I don't have a PD engine though.

No CEL for low egr?

Plus catch cans way too much too hey Devonutopia??

Mine has been on for ages now, and is fine.

MOT guy said "thats breathing heavy aint it?" with a big grin on his face. I knew exactly what he was on about.

The open end of the pipe does look like it steams abit, but thats just moisture.

Had crank case off the other day, and all looks mint.

Mines tucked behind the radiator and fixed to the plastic rad support bracket using ties. Been there since last summer. No problems, although odd to see steam from the grill on cold mornings. Originally had electrical flexible conduit as tubing so looked like original underbonnet equipment but changed to washing machine hose as it's stronger, the ends fit exactly and the colour looks impressive. £1.50. The tank? 1 litre red oil bottle. An excellent mod.

as promised here are is my effort which i'm really pleased about. mounted on the airbox with a little additional bracing internally.

some more support that it may be a good idea to do this mod:

I quote "Volkswagen issued a TSB, 2499-04, on the MAF. They are prone to oil vapors from the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PVC) system collecting on the MAF sensor."

Volkswagen Passat Very Poor MPG

I read this whole thread ! Very interesting read & i must say some nice tidy work on a few.

I saw a feela asking if any1 has modded their PD 170 ?!?

I would be very interested in seeing some1's handy work on one of these and maybe some feedback on how its going for them so far...

Kind Regards

Tom

TIA,

Oh yeah, but that's relating to my EGR delete, not the CCV to atmos mod. :) Mine does steam when cold. Does it bother me? Nope! :D Even better now I read that thing about potential maf damage from crank case vapours.

Mine steams as well, noticed a slight patch of "oily substance" under the car at the end of the CCV vent hose. Checked oil and found i'd lost none. Think is probably all the vapour mixing with the cr@p from the road

Looking into a catch can

I got my CEL light (from having no EGR -only) mapped out - It is there to alert you to potential problems you know, lol

No EGR=no probs...

Thank you Basil and devonutopia, this was exactly what I needed to know :)

Here is a picture of my catch can, the muck in the can is what has accumulated over about 2,500 miles.

Can't believe I've only just discovered this thread.

I ran a hose to the atmosphere on my Golf MK4 1.6 and it seemed smoother as well so I think the Fabia will get the same treatment this weekend!
